Re: VR + knock module

@AndrejB: ...well, priorities change over time, too... I would never try to sense the Cam-Teeth wit VR; there are good reasons why most of the OEMs don't do. For the commonality between VR-1wire and Hall, I guess a circuitry with 1 Opamp should do (incl. adaptive thresh). For VR-2wire maybe 3 Opamps...

@AndrejB: ...without being involved in the creation of either of both circuits... TMHO Smoczy's circuit provides following advantages compared to the VR-module, that you show: 1. It is simpler and involves less circuitry, which leads to... ...lower cost ...smaller space 2. It has an adaptive functio...

Re: Software knock processing

@Simon: please find some comments in the attached modified presentation. There are mainly three things, that I disagree with: 1. Transient knock can be very strong and thus need to be avoided. Transient knock cannot be handled by sensor-based knock detection, because it simply is too slow, as the re...

Re: Ion Sense

@JohnP: very interesting paper from Visteon. The findings were mostly well-known state-of-technology. If you only look at the pure detection of knock-occurrence, there is a lot arguments for ion-sensing. There are three alternative solutions know: vibration-based (knock sensor), ion-current-based, c...

Re: Software knock processing

@simon: what makes you think, that there is ONE baseline? The noise-level, depends on a variety of parameters (e.g. engine speed&load, cylinder-no., sensor placement, engine aging, valve timing and valve lash, etc.). Measuring a baseline during deceleration does not make any sense, as there will...

@OrchardPerformance: Looking to the diagram, the black trace is the typical shape of an ion-sense native signal, with the blue trace being combustion pressure as reference. It is important to know, that you don't get this perfect shape under all conditions of engine operation: mid/high load operatio...

Hmmm...
I still don't understand the rational behind this doing.
Has a Harley engine got two spark-plugs, so he can replace one?
If he is doing cranking- (motored-)Test without combustion only, what is it good for to know TDC in motored operation?

Re: cheap cylinder pressure sensor option - smart diesel glow plug with pressure sensor

Its not that there is not access, its that there is no access without pulling the side cover and fitting a degree wheel which is the standard approach but was deemed to much bother iirc. The older ones had a plug in the case to check timing left over from the points days but on the new designs that...

Re: cheap cylinder pressure sensor option - smart diesel glow plug with pressure sensor

That's why, I think this forum (and most others) needs an engine analysis chapter and a system design chapter. The conditions of a specific engine need to be clarified in a separate activity and not in a software or (ECU)hardware chapter, and within it should be documented in a kind of engine-datash...

Hi guys,
just looking through MRE. Looks really nice for 4-cyl applications.
You decided to use TLE8888 for it.
Did you find a reliable distributor for the procurement of this chip?
I only found Digikey, who seem to be willing to sell small numbers of it.
Is there any other second source?

Well... ...the world is definitely not separated in ECU-software and ECU-hardware. I like to see it Top-Down rather than Bottom-up. Engine control is multi-domain. So far I do not fully understand your knock detection algorithm yet.

- What is done, after knock occurrence has been detected?
- How is your knock-control strategy and algorithm?

Re: cheap cylinder pressure sensor option - smart diesel glow plug with pressure sensor
