They seem to incrementally advance timing until slight knock then back down as soon as knock has been detected. From my understanding, this is ideal only when an engine is octane limited. TI recently updated the TPIC8101 datasheet. One of the lines that is interesting states: "For a flat-type knock sensor, the bandpass filter design equation can be used to determine where the center frequency should be set." Following that, they give the standard DSP biquad filter equation....

thanks for the comment. regarding schemes with a charge from the ignition coil - capacitor is quickly discharged and will not give an accurate picture of the ION current. to get a beautiful picture need a current mirror with external power. You may also have too much gain from the sensor, have you tried to induce knock? if so then how far above the noise floor is the knock signal. Your sensor is likely to have a different internal resistance and capacitance so you could try tweaking the input stage to try and optimise the impedance ma...

Perhaps you should try to create an audible knock (you can hear it with your own ears) and then take a look at the TPIC output. I am doing some on car testing myself today. That is my fault for not mentioning what IC to use. VN750PS-E seemed to be most appropriate the task. I finally found some spare time to come back to this. If we consider the MOSI circuit to be purely an RC circuit, your MOSI line had just under 70 picoFarads of capacitance. That sounds very high. Was your probe in 10x mode? Was your logic analyzer or any other device connected to the MOSI line?

Do you want the board to use any type of terminals for input/output connections, or do you plan on soldering wires directly to the board? Just solding.
