Re: Auto-tune does not produce good results

If I understand you correctly, Nik, you're asking how much energy is needed to make the crankshaft spin before the engine actually starts doing the work of spinning the transmission? Frictional losses, accessory drive, lots of stuff go into this. I am going to go out on a limb and say "single d...

Slides from a Tuning Class I once taught

I taught this class several times. Most of the folks in attendance knew how to turn wrenches but did not have a lot of prior tuning experience. The class was aimed at the Moates QuarterHorse for EECIV Ford applications, but I spent a day going over things that were general tuning concepts. The secon...

Re: MAF vs Speed Density, why do we prefer which one?

If I had to pick a MAF or a MAP sensor, I'd take a MAF any day of the week. MAF is inherently far more accurate for metering airflow in conditions where you can achieve or nearly achieve laminar flow. Choose your MAF wisely, mount it wisely, filter it as little as necessary. You know airflow. No gue...

Everyone except me seem to think DBC K series are hot shit.

I am more of the DBW persuasion. So I will be tackling the 06-14 pinout(132). If it ends up a parallel effort to a Hellen, cool. If you end up tackling DBC connector/pinout(125), cool.

Re: 1997 Ford F-150 5.4 E4OD

Part of the reason half bridges are used for higher speed switching vs. FET+diode is that the non-switched FET can act as an active flyback path, which is often termed synchronous rectification. The losses from a fully-on FET are current * Rds(on) whereas losses from diode are current * Vf. Combine ...

Re: 1997 Ford F-150 5.4 E4OD

Another note: High-speed Schottky diodes are generally a good choice for the flyback diodes for relatively low switching speeds. Reverse voltage only needs to be margin of error > Vsupply which will give a great selection of parts. They're generally pretty fast. Be mindful of both PEAK and AVERAGE c...

Re: 1997 Ford F-150 5.4 E4OD

Talking with dbh on slack, I have a rather strong feeling that the lack of a gate drive resistor in the circuit is to blame for component death. 6A (specified by MCP1407) is a *lot* of gate drive current for casual switching. The MOSFET doesn't specify Rgate so ASSuming it to be around 1ohm puts the...

Re: Idle tuning, Part 1

With cable throttle, the throttle stop is an important factor affecting the minimum amount of air that can go through the throttle. When it closes, the throttle rests against the stop, but that doesn't mean that it restricts airflow completely. It's generally a good idea to adjust the throttle stop ...

Re: Cranking / starting part 1

Edited for clarity / more information Dec14-2021 DB For a rule of thumb, the the cranking RPM limit should be about 2.5x the fastest speed "starter" spins is a good estimate (i.e. 120 x 2.5 = 300 RPM). The cranking RPM limit is the speed at which the ECU stops using "cranking" lo...

Cranking / starting part 1

Again... it was asked to preserve some slack discussion on getting appropriate settings for cranking and starting the engine. Much like idle, this can be kind of tricky and there isn't an instrument you can put on an engine like a wideband for cranking. Overall strategy: -You need to get the motor s...

Re: Idle tuning, Part 1

Automatic transmission special notes: Air changes slowly. There is a HUGE difference between PN and D airflow with an automatic transmssion. Once drive has been engaged, the torque converter and pump have to be spun. This is a much larger load on the engine. Strategy for tuning: 1. Map out airflow r...

Re: Idle tuning, Part 1

Overall general strategy: 1. You need a solid foundation to build on. Idle is built on top of general motor operation. The quality of your tune in terms of fuel and ignition close to / around idle will have a huge impact on idle quality. Try to get fueling in the region around idle tuned to a CONSIS...

It was asked to preserve some of this so... Let me preface this that idle tuning is probably one of the HARDEST parts about making an engine run really well. The schematics that Honda used for decoding their VR sensors is available if you wanted to copy something that's literally been used hundreds of thousands of times. If you want to throw money at the problem to solve it, T1 has sold a special cam gear that has 13 rare earth magnets pressed into it for ~15 years. The cam gear has 12 magnets of one polarity evenly spaced for a "crank" signal. The cam gear has one magnet of the OPPOSITE POLARITY for a cam...

One partial solution is the CKF or Crank Fluctuation Sensor. This sensor was added to some US market OBD2 vehicles. Honda D/B/H trigger patterns (Most Distributor Hondas)

Distributor Hondas present a slightly unique challenge for rusEFI. From the factory, 88-01(ish) D, B, H and F series engines came with distributors with ***3*** VR sensors inside. One wheel (crank / CKP) fired at 8 or 12 pulses/crank rev (16/24 teeth in distributor, spinning at camshaft speed. 95+ v...
