Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

Sorry for not coming back immediately with a reply. I ended up wiping and reinstalling my laptop for various reasons, then have been procrastinating this issue ever since. I still have the logs, but I wasn't deliberately trying to get logs of the issue so they aren't very targeted. I'll try and get ...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

I tested the ecu with a timing light and the problem is either with the trigger circuit or the firmware. I tried to set the offset but the coil is firing a lot more than it should so it was impossible. Spark works exactly as it's supposed to when using the io test, but the sniffer looks fine so I'm ...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

I have a bad habit of working on this thing for a while, then getting distracted by life and other projects. I got the unit out again today, rebuilt a config using the latest firmware and latest version of tunerstudio and I can't get the motor to start. I don't have a timing light at the moment, but...

Awesome. I probably won't get to mess with it until next weekend, but I'll keep you posted.

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

I'm eagerly awaiting your progress. If I understand correctly, the problem with how it's set now is it's looking for both rising and falling edges to trigger from, which is problematic with VRs because that falling edge will move around as the p2p voltage rises and falls. Close enough?

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

No problem. I wasn't going to be trying anything else on it until tomorrow anyway. I can't expect it to be perfect when this is the 32nd engine to run.

Fresh tunerstudio project on a clean firmware flash (same version, but I had to erase and reflash to get the board bootable again). Same result as soon as I enabled "only use rising edge"

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

Disabled SD and restarted, worked fine. Changed trigger settings (set 'only rising edge' to true and the unused one to false), locked. LCD on frankesno is completely blank and the fuel pump runs continually. Solid red? led on discovery right by reset button. I'm going to try a completely fresh tuner...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

I suppose that explains why nothing really changed when I tried turning that setting off... I'll run out to the car and give it a shot with that enabled again. As far as steps to reproduce, I'm just going to open up tunerstudio, change the setting, flash it, restart, then start the car.

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

Under "Custom Trigger" I have "Use Rise Edge" as true, is that not the same thing? I have tried using the "use only rising edge" setting, but it's locked me out of the serial console in the past. I've had to take the discovery board out of the car back to my desktop to ...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

I feel like the AFR should be smoother, but the motor is running fairly smooth if it is missing 100% of the sparks... Here are some of the most recent logs, maybe they'll shed more light. Can I get an explanation of how the ECU is determining that spark events have been missed? there should be 1x sp...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

Here's my most recent msq (it's set a bit rich atm) and a tunerstudio log. I can't find anywhere in the console to record a log, and I can't imagine a copy-paste being much more useful than me saying there's no apparent pattern in the missed spark events. I was trying to do some tuning earlier with ...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap #32

I'm still getting missed spark events and I can't figure out if it's a trigger thing or a software bug of some sort. There's no real pattern to it, I just get a message of "looks like missed spark" every 20 or so cycles (not a consistent number). Afr seems to drop slightly when these happe...

Doing idle tuning now. I'd get in the car for a gentle cruise around the neighborhood but my laptop battery can't be trusted so I'm tethered to the garage until I grab an inverter.

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

IT'S RUNNING! 4 tooth wheel, ended up using a trigger angle of 102 (I'm still not sure how that number works, my distributor is set to somewhere between 16 and 18 base timing) Engine seems to be rather smooth, but I'm getting some very regular skipped spark errors, here's a capture of it running and...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Spark has been moved to a low side driver because the Honda ignition module wants to be pulled low to trigger spark and left floating otherwise. I have all the drivers not doing anything right now.

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Cool. Should have more cranking (and maybe starting!) tonight. If this works, I might put in an order for an extra VR board and see if I can get the 1 tooth working with the MAX or if I need to go the comparator route. The Frankenso VR's are set to mode A2 and per page 3 of the below PDF, the VMIN-T...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

So with that change, a new firmware build should fix this? I suppose I could always remove that pin specification if I needed to, I'm just guessing the new tunerstudio file defaulted it to that.

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Both are set to what they're supposed to be. I can reproduce it just by using that msq file. One thing I noticed is in tunerstudio under map settings the setting is labeled "battery voltage adc" or something like that. I see this in the file, is this normal? <constant name="console_rx...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Added the 2k2 resistors across the vr inputs. Input impedance is now between 2 and 3k (compared to 50k something before) and the stock ecu impedance is like 9k. Bench testing I don't see any noise, but there isn't really a lot of electrical noise to be had where I'm testing. I now am getting an erro...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Ok, looks like a pretty normal board. I guess I'll go ahead and put back the 0R to ground and the 5k on R111/R112 and make sure all the solder looks good. Beyond that, I'm not sure what else could cause my issues because you had 2 different engines running with this exact configuration.

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Yeah, all 3 are in a line on the cam. "Crank" or "CKP" really just refers to the wheel the main timing is done off of. 16 teeth, or 8 per crank rotation. (upped to 24 teeth in 92+ cars) "TDC" is the 4 tooth wheel with one tooth at TDC for each cylinder. I think honda us...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

But just to confirm I'm not wasting my time with this, it should run with a custom wheel with 2 teeth per crank revolution, right? I know I can't run sequential fuel because I can't identify which cylinder is which.

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

A bit more progress, kind of. Did some more tinkering with the trigger/ignition timing and I feel like it's triggering properly, and I get decent sniffer captures, but the timing light and spark plugs don't give me what I should be getting. I seem to be getting a spark about half as often as I shoul...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Engine was lukewarm. I think the timing is the biggest hurdle at this moment. Triggers look good to my untrained eye, I just don't think they're lined up how they need to be. If I know my trigger events are happening at 16 degrees BTDC, I set the trigger angle to 16 in tunerstudio? Then is advance c...

Re: 1991 Honda CRX B16A Swap

Wouldn't 360 degrees make no difference at all, or was that just hyperbole? In this case, with a distributor and simultaneous injection, I understand I should only have to worry about timing events within a 90 degree window, since the exact same cycle repeats with every cylinder. I don't have any mo...
