Trigger Pattern Configuration for GM Vortec 5.7L L31

Post by tobsec »

I‘m trying to get my 5.7L Vortec L31 engine running with the stock triggers. It has a 4x crank and 1x cam which is something I didn’t find any support for in the TunerStudio configuration options.
The closest option I see is a Dodge RAM 8x crank / 1x cam which I already checked out in the source code for possible adaptions.

Does anybody already use a 4x/1x pattern successfully? Or do I need to implement it in the source code?

There is a chance that what you are looking for is "custom skipped 4/0" with "require cam for sync" and "first half" cam/vvt input? With a timing light to confirm offsets?

Trigger Pattern Configuration for GM Vortec 5.7L L31

Thank you, I though the „advanced trigger“ options may only apply for VVT stuff according to the descriptions. But if it will help synchronize the 4x crank to be able to run full sequential it would be the perfect fit.

I found the option „require cam/VVT sync for ignition“, I guess you meant to enable that? But what do you mean with „first half“ for cam input? Shall I choose „Single Tooth First Half“ for e.g. „Cam mode (intake cams)“ or exhaust cam or even both? How to assign the trigger inputs then, as „cam sensor“ is supposed to be the primary channel shall I assign it to both (cam sensor primary and cam sensor bank 1) and only use crank in secondary channel?

What I already tried previously is „custom toothed wheel“ with 8/0 as I though we need to count all tooth for 720 degrees. With that I was able to have the engine starting and „running“ for some seconds but according to my AFR readings I had to set injector flow to somewhat 90cc-100cc instead of 260cc. For that reason I feel something is odd, even if the scope readings in the console looked correct. I tried both simultaneous and batch injection, but I stopped further experimenting as I think it makes more sense to directly go to have a sequential setup.

yes,yes
you do not have two cam sensors to select "both" do you?

Nope. Please do not use 8/0 unless you have a 8/0 wheel. You said it's a 4/0 wheel so please specify 4/0.

Ok clear, thanks a lot! I just quickly setup some test bench by generating the exact pulse pattern I’m expecting from the engine by an Arduino and fed it into an f4-discovery. Actual results looks pretty decent. Looking forward to test this config on the engine hopefully tomorrow.

Tested today on the engine with more or less this config. I just used "second half" as cam signal is inverted and 4/0. Now it runs already pretty good after I had setup the position offset correctly. Uploaded my current tune.

Now need to get idle air via ETB dialed in correctly to get a stable idle possibly with closed loop. Any idea where to get some good starting values for closed loop idle? Would also be interesting to enable closed loop idle timing probably as the engine will be placed in a boat where I need to have a solid and stable idle while shifting into gear.
