G'day from straya mate

Post by squidgy »

G'day to everyone on the forum,

Seems like you have a pretty good bit of kit there Russian, my name is Damien I'm from the lower side of Australia, Victoria. I have little to no experience with aftermarket ECU's or soldering boards together only done it a few times long ago, i am however a heavy diesel mechanic and played with a lot of different vehicles over the last 15 years or so, i have never tuned anything before however i understand basics, so probably plenty of questions from me in the near future

I have a bit of a project going at the moment and deciding on what route to take. The car is an Australian ford falcon 4.0 litre inline 6 cyl sohc engine with a distributor, with an electronically controlled btr 4 speed auto transmission, i have another engine id like to put into the car it is also a 4.0 litre but it is dohc and COP much nicer engine with dual vct. i know i can throw the engine in the car and wire up the factory dohc ecu and reflash it to run in the car and utilize the obd II, but the only 2 programs i can purchase to do this is well over the 700 dollar mark last time i looked. I like the idea of using an aftermarket ecu at an affordable price with future features being able to be added later.

the engine at this point in time has a factory vr sensor and i think a 36-1 trigger wheel, it has 2 pin style coils which the factory ecu can fire which ill probably need and ignitor to fire with an aftermarket ecu, as far as the vct goes it is only used for fuel economy so i dont care if it is lost due to vernier cam gears

these engine have made upwards of 1000whp with gt47 or similar size turbos, stock cylinder heads and stock cams running e85 so in the future i would like to boost the engine on e85 and hopefully put down around 550whp

things i dont understand is how i set up wasted spark on a 6 cylinder engine i dont know how many coil drivers your boards have
And do you have instructions on how to set up components on the board the right way so the smoke doesn't come out when i turn it on
and how hard is it run my factory ecu just to control the auto and the rest of the car while running your ecu just to control spark, fuel and engine related things

I have put a lot of thought into this but trying to research these inline 6 cylinder engines is a nightmare people here in Australia just take it somewhere and it comes back with millions of horespower and of course tuners do not like to share things with customers....any help would be appreciated :D

cheers Damien

Hello and welcome!

We have a tiny igniter add-on board for prototyping area - I guess I need to order a bunch of these and list these at the store. I've just added http://rusefi.com/wiki/index.php?title=Manual:Hardware_Ignition which has the picture of my test mule board with these add-on boards.

Automatic transmission is probably the least researched part and this area is still waiting for a trailblazer. I can help with the code but I do not have the time to play with rusEfi first automatic transmission yet.

Igniters can also make a fair bit of heat, as well they are dealing with high voltage which creates a high EMI environment. Getting the heat and EMI away from the ECU and closer to the coil is often beneficial from an electrical noise point of view. There are many low cost and good OEM external igniters. I might suggest considering a J701. I posted a pencil schematic here. Those are driven by the 6 channels of hi/low ignition channels. You can have either one for each cyl, or use 3 channels with wasted spark. There are 6 total of these hi/lo drivers.

The Frankenso board is reasonably rugged, I don't think anyone has let the smoke out if it yet. There are thermal limiters and other such protections on the output circuits which activate if you short circuit something. The analog input circuits are designed to sustain a constant 12V input, if you accidentally wire a 5V signal with 12V, you don't damage it. About the only way I can see it breaking is if you don't install the fuse on the 12V power supply, or if you connect the 400V kick back from the ignition circuit to an input. The design has taken into account many potential items that can happen with a DIY setup which would not happen on a OEM setup.

There's always the first one to let the smoke out :) I actually found your ignitors as soon as I posted, however I was thinking about using corolla coil packs with built in ignitors they look like they will fit

I didn't realise Frankenso had 6 channels for spark. so that means I can use 6 channels for sequential spark and still batch fire injectors?

The engine currently also has a DBW throttle body but the car doesnt maybe I will just run a cable throttle for simplicity

Has anybody ran e85 with a gm flex fuel sensor before with Frankenso? Tunerstudio shouldnt have an issue doing it

Very keen on project but still very green basically I know nothing about code, I have never had the opportunity to learn it.

Looks like the fuel composition sensor would report ethanol % with output frequency and fuel temperature with pulse width, but right now I have no idea which formulas would be affected by these values.

Frankenso has 6 ignition and 12fuel. So you can run a 6cyl with control over each cyl's ignition and fuel.

It's actually 8 ignition channels now - the isometric @ http://rusefi.com/wiki/index.php?title=Manual:Hardware_Frankenso_board is a bit outdated. I guess a 0.4 isometric would be most appropriate since that's the one we are currently populating, which probably also means that we need to convert the https://svn.code.sf.net/p/rusefi/code/trunk/hardware/rusefi_hardware_history/frankenso_rev00.40/ history snapshot folder to KiCad 4

Oops, I forgot we did that. I'll try to find the drawing, and update the graphic.
