Greetings from Portugal
Greetings from Portugal
hello I'm joão and I'm from Portugal.
when I heard about your project I was very interested.
I am setting up a BMW 320i for trackdays and it seems quite appropriate to test this control unit.
The big question is whether it is compatible with the VANOS system?
Best regards

Re: Greetings from Portugal
Welcome!
What year 320?
variable valve timing is currently being added for http://rusefi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1060 so that's close. A bigger problem would be electronic throttle body if you have it - while we have some naive implementation I think it's far from being tested on a track.

Re: Greetings from Portugal
None of the engines so far had VANOS but I am sure we can get it work - we have all the pieces. How are you with electronics - do you know if it's high-side control or low-side control on the vanos actuator?Jcruz wrote:doubts as I set rpm and output for vanos in ts .

Re: Greetings from Portugal
This is the MS40.1 controller scheme originally installed for VANOS. The Vanos actuator is represented by Y60. The battery power goes to 30. K30 the main relay.

Re: Greetings from Portugal
Looks like Y60 is controlled on the low-side, so our board would work without a high-side add-on.

Re: Greetings from Portugal
What is VANOS control logic? First of all, is it just an on/off or does it have multiple positions? Is there a position sensor?

Re: Greetings from Portugal
more or less like this
"At idle, the gear is retracted. As the RPM bumps off idle, the cup inserts further into the gear and advances intake valve timing. This creates intake and exhaust valve overlap, allowing for exhaust gas recirculation (an operation designed to improve emissions while cruising). When accelerating into the higher RPM ranges, the solenoid closes and the cup retracts once again, reducing overlap and going for max power."

Re: Greetings from Portugal
Good. Is there a cam sensor on the intake cam? How many tooth on that sensor?
What is the shape of the crank sensor signal - is that some skipped wheel or is that something BMW custom?
We are currently working on a hopefully very similar setup @ http://rusefi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1060 but at the moment this is not finished and not tested. On the bright side, I am confident that we have all the pieces for this so this should not be a problem.

Re: Greetings from Portugal
I remember seeing the pictures above and now these are not available Not sure what you are trying to link at but looks like this does not work permanently.
http://pt.bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E36-Coupe/Europe/320i-M50/L-M/sep1992/browse/engine/timing_gear_timing_chain_top_2/ does not give me much information, I need more details on how many teeth and what are the angle position of all teeth on the wheel. If information is nowhere to be found we can also record it on the car - see http://rusefi.com/wiki/index.php?title=Manual:Software:UnknownTrigger
