Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
Fun BMW fact: BMW (and Mini) uses quite an unusual thread size/pitch for towing hook attachment. There is a chance that the only compatible vehicle is Kia Stinger.
Towing dolly & motel booked, Kia Stinger tow hook in the trunk. Plan is to drive to CT on tomorrow and hopefully touch my big mistake this Wednsday.
Please send your condolences.

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
Car does not smell inside - probably not a flood.
Inside coolant reservoir there is low level of clean coolant - not milkshake.
Car has key, key lights up dash, zero reaction on start button - no cranking no dash blinking.
That's all I know about this car, I've left it at Manny's one hour north on NYC - Manny is a great mechanic/shop owner/Lemons racer. He will look at this car next week.
I am home in one piece which is the most important part of this trip.

"theft prevention standards"? may be that's the root cause of zero reation on start button?

Whoa, there!...you're not planning to drive a V12 car are you? I thought there was an understanding in the club that these are projects, to talk about, share pics of and such but never actually drive? Nobody else is driving their's........
Nice find...but now I feel like the pressure is on to to also make mine drive

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
$300 for a fancy battery plus one hour labor to install it and the engine is running!
It has dumped a lot of power steering fluid out so PS pump is strong!
It does not go into any gear and while there is communication with some modules, there is no communication with many modules like ABS and TCU.
I've asked Manny to fix PS hose and to invest few more hours into this big mistake of mine to see if he can get it to drive at least at 5 miles per hour. Next call next Friday

a rotten can-bus wire? you'd need to invest in a cable tracker to investigate such issues...

At the moment I am investing in Manny and I hope he has relevant skills. With engine running I have motivation to invest a bit of $ into the car.

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
Title has arrived - previous owner got the car in 2013 with 87K miles and a 5 year lean with BMW Bank of North America. Hopefully that roof and headlight damage was enough to total the car at 140K miles and hopefully the car was somewhat drivable prior to the accident.
mechatronic is EGS (computer) and valve body plate. Here are removal instructions:
1) remove oil pan/oil filter (two dozen torx I assume?)
2) Unlock and disconnect the round electrical connector from the back of transmission. https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/oem_docs/Bmw/2003_7_Series_e65/6_speed_sleeve_replacement.pdf
3) pull tan tab inside transmission to unlock sleeve https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/oem_docs/Bmw/2003_7_Series_e65/6_speed_sleeve_replacement.pdf
4) Pull out the sealing sleeve without twisting or rotating motion. https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/oem_docs/Bmw/2003_7_Series_e65/6_speed_sleeve_replacement.pdf
5) remove 7 long and 3 short T40 bolts (do not remove smaller T bolts
6) mission accomplished, you should have mechatronic (computer and valve body plate) in your hands?

Status update: non-original and melted due to contact with exhaust wiring was found between engine bay and transmission. Investigation slowly progresses.

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
Nope, 1-1394367-1 replacement did not get the car moving.
First DMV visit and a title drama came up! Working with autobidmaster to figure that out.
The funniest thing? According to Copart this 760LI is green.

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
OMG that is the best thread ever. I'm following.!
It is like a good old M73 BUT with soo much more electronic and problems...... I actually wish I could help, I love those projects..
hmm before spending any money on the tranny, check the valve seals on the engine, they usually go bad and it is really expensive to fix..
Transmission is linked with EVERYTHING.. so check any bad connection and rusted grounds..

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
TL,DR: next step is to replace coil packs, there is an opinion that this would help transmission. Bear with me:
760IL is now with Sergey at shop #2. Those hacked wires which were melted on cat and maybe replaced? Those were two CAN networks. Sergey says OEM CAN wiring is totally fine and he is removing those hack jobs wires.
Apparently there is CAN comms with trans as long as engine is not running. Once engine is running, and Sergey says it's misfiring, CAN comms is lost.
Sergey says he has seen broken coils emitting magic and killing CAN like this.
In other news: variable valve timing module is damaged or full of water, it has just burned a new set of 40A variable timing fuses. $100 replacement ordered.

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
And now MORE news:
Ок good news and bad news.
Good news, trans drives, was missing 6 quarts of fluid, we topped it off and fluid will need to be replaced... but good news transmission shifts, took it around the block, has Christmas's tree of lights, but works.
Trans pan leaking and I think the plug is leaking as well. Need that vvt module, to continue...

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
There is good and bad news ...
The Vvt module came, but then it started throwing camshaft codes, maybe there was a problem with the chain... but there is also a lot of mouse shit under the hood ... so maybe the mice ate something ...
Also on the raise, both rear bags leak, both sides fall every day ...

Re: 2004 BMW 760 N73 "A big mistake"
Two months and 42 calls to AutoBidMaster, Copart and Utica National Insurance and I now have limited power of attorney signed not just by one but each of the two owners.
DMV appointment on Monday. Plan is to get at least Salvage title in my name.
Next open question salvage inspection. The nice lady on the phone has informed me that whatever was reason for salvage has to be repaired to "showroom condition". I would not get rebuild title until I repair the damage.
Primary damage was top/roof. I believe that we are talking about this dent. I have a feeling that inability to repair the transmission played some role in the decision to total the vehicle due to the dent on the roof.

I now officially own this vehicle. It's officially a salvage due to roof damage. Here are better images of what has totaled this amazing vehicle.
