The Lemon and Beer Money Motorsports

Good day everyone! I wanted to introduce myself and my bad habits.

My name is Jesse and I have had a bad car habit for most of my life. For the last 17 years or so it has been directed towards Miatas. I have even started a small business of working on them for other enthusiasts. Everything from basic work to full builds and swaps. Including building Megasquirts for people around the US.

For my personal cars, i have two Miatas. First is a black and tan 93 that i purchased from my mom. I was going to be a v8 swap(engine and trans are mounted) but it has been paused. This is somewhat due to Miata #2. The second car is one i built for a friend and have recently purchased from him. Its a 90 with built 1.8, GTX3017r turbo, 6-speed, 3.63 rear, meagsquirt, etc etc etc. This car is so fast, who needs a v8? This is why i will most likely go another route with the 93. Possibly an MZR swap? Who knows!

Recently i have been looking for better options to offer customers as far as Engine Management. MS prices keep going up and putting it out of reach of many consumers. This has brought me here! I have ordered an PNP for the NA6 so that I can start experimenting with it. Hopefully while doing some testing, ill be able to give a positive contribution to development!

Here is a few pics of the Lemon! Excuse her filthiness!

Welcome!

Price, performance and quality of the PnP units should really meet the sweet spot for Miata builders.

How about some more details on the Lemon? Kraken setup? What turbo? Built bottom end? Dyno graph?

I am looking forward to playing with it to see how it does. It will be tested on the Lemon.

1.8 bored to 84mm
Wiseco 8.6 pistons
manley rods
arp rods, mains and head studs
Boundary engineering billet oil pump
Fluidampyre pulley
MSM head with Volvo valve springs and stock MSM cams
Honda Intake Manifold by Chatham CNC
70mm Throttle body
750cc injectors
Artech style manifold built by Chatham CNC
3" exhaust with the usual magnaflow muffler.
LS1 coils
custom wiring harness
GTX3071R turbo
Vibrant intercooler

No dyno as of yet. On wastegate pressure(13) it likes to spin the 225 200tw tires coming into boost. Haha. Currently retuning everything. Expanded maps to 300kpa and working on the Boost control PIDs now. I am planning to run about 175kpa and would like to get really close to 400whp on 93.

@BeerMoneyMotorsports you would need to solder 48 connector holes + 6 map holes + ~60 microRusEFI holes

for your board to look like https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/MREAdapter48

Please validate my 0R jumper removal once you get the board - same https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/MREAdapter48 has jumper removal table on the bottom

all your soldering is on the back
on top it looks ready to go

while in reality it is not :slightly_smiling_face:

That should be a quick 15 minutes of soldering! Far easier than soldering the small transistors on the MS boards.

Nice build!

That 3071 should make what? 350-400hp? Boost onset around 4000?

GTX3071R is good for over 500. I have full boost before 4k.

Currently looking over the board after performing the soldering. Need to nail down modifications required to allow VTPS and Sequential Fuel on the NA6 board.

If i am reading this correctly;

Seq Fuel
Remove JP58 and 59 jumpers
Jump JP 53 and 57

TPS(Honda TPS in my case)
remove R22

Tach Output(LS1 Coils)
remove JP55
Jump JP54
At old ignitor connection, jump pins 4 and 5. (memory is a bit rusty, ill update later)

Is this correct?

I have that printed out and that is what I’m going off of. Need to double check my chassis wiring to confirm I have sequential on the main ecu connectors and not on the MS options port. It has been a hot minute since I did the harness.

Here’s a pic of the soldered board and a toasty doggo.

I have it set up and on the bench powered by the usb connection. I updated the firmware from bundle(screenshot below) using the console. Tuner Studio connection was successful! I loaded a tune from RusOnline and restarted the module. No more communication after multiple power downs and ups. Previously had blinky lights but now I don't. I'll snap a pic and upload it. Port is not showing any connection in device manager which makes me assume something is up with the tune I loaded or a failure during the upload process.

1. why? I assume that because you are not aware of default tunes for popular vehicles hard-coded into firmware?

2. which one?

I have an idea how to resolve this but I would need a few hours to write things up. Please help by answering the questions above.

1- I did this because i was ignorant to the built in tunes.

2- I used one uploaded by beufa 2021-01-27

could this be due to mismatch in signatures or some other occurance?

Please provice exact URL with exact tune ID. I've spend 60 seconds to locate a tune by your description but was unable to find one.

Do you see your MRE (more precisely STM32) as DFU on your system if you boot it with program button pushed ?

The last time I brick my MRE, (modified INI  ) I had to update it with STM32CubeProgrammer, and load the .hex file instead of the dfu.

It overwrites everything, and works fine.
I don't know if there is an other way to remove the bad tune.

If you're already in stm32cubeprogrammer, you can just erase the configuration pages out of flash memory. They're the last two 128kb pages. Alternatively, do a full chip erase and flash new firmware (bin or hex, not dfu).

I was thinking it would require a wipe and reload of the firmware.

Right now i have some connection to it by booting with the program button pressed. It shows STM device in DFU under Universal Serial Bus. Working on acquiring the STM32Cubeprogrammer now.

Please maybe do not acquire STM32Cubeprogrammer considering the incompatible drivers drama.

I need a bit of time to make new build configuration "recovery firmware" - a version of firmware which resets settings to default on start.

the stm32cubeprogrammer comes with an API - we should just use it to create an "erase config" button in the rusefi launcher

"should" is a vague term. We "could" do a lot of things if we have unlimited budget which we do not have. At the moment we have a user with a specific issue so we have to balance efforts, risks and costs, right?

Well, we have three options:

1) we try reproducing the bricking https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/issues/2249

2) if we have no volunteers to reproduce the bricking, harder but strategically better option would be to download stm32cubeprogrammer in order to READ that flash. I am curious to know how exactly loading of a Frankesno tune has bricked MRE, there might be something worth improving here

3) and simplest option would be to try new custom binary https://rusefi.com/build_server/rusefi_bundle_mre_f4_recovery.zip which is supposed to reset tune on each start.
a) use "program" button to enter DFU
b) use "Manual DFU" rusEFI console option to upload
c) if that helps, overwrite recovery firmware with normal firmware

I have acquired the STM32 programmer. Will probably need some guidance on how to use it. I’m willing to do anything needed to further improve functionality and made issues like this a simple fix in the future. I think it’s key to understand how my simple mistake escalated to a bricked module.

Progress update! The lemon has been running on different hellens for some time now! First with the prototype Hellen72 with an adapter to my na6 harness. Was able to confirm both knock detection and wideband operation!!! I now have it on a prototype Hellen64 but have not tested the knock and wbo yet. Ill try to be more diligent about updates but enjoy these videos!

I was looking into https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/issues/669 from 2019 and it looks like the issue is at least partially related to the specific Miata NA trigger decoder not any generic rusEFI code.

I've just pushed https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/commit/0af5de0934ccee3e1352d4cfe39d2ee401a96f02 change which I believe might help Miata NA cranking/starting by decoding trigger signal properly more often while throwing start up codes less often.

Beer can you please update to latest firmware later today and give this improved version a try? At least it would be nice to know that Miata NA still starts :)

While we are on the subject of trigger decoding can you please order yourself a couple of https://www.ebay.com/itm/124238666414 unless you have those already?
