1993 Manual Swapped NA6 Miata

Post by CheeriooV2 »

Some background info, it's a 1993 auto Miata. I swapped in a manual transmission. Got a used 1990 manual ECU on the car. Run&Drive but idle at 2000rpm+ and fluctuate. (I tried the manual adjustment on the throttle body, no luck there) So I figured it might be the MAF sensor doesn't match with the ECU. I guess a standalone ECU can fix it. After I got the ECU, I've connected a vacuum hose from the intake manifold to the ECU.

But it won't start and it gave me the trigger error. (crank but no start). It says synchronization @index 3 expected 4/8/0 but got 4/0/0 instead. Warning: Trigger not happy current 4/0/0 expected 4/8/0. Any suggestion on the problem?

It looks like one of the shaft position signal channels is not providing signal. Part of final board assembly I do manually is adjusting one of the relevant resistors - it could be that I did not do it good :( If you have faith in your wiring and in your sensor it sounds like we should try swapping the board.

We can do eBay refund or you can ship me that board and I will ship you a replacement one.

I am sorry you are having a bad experience :(

So sad :( , I was really excited to test the board. Sorry for the late reply, last week was crazy busy for me. I still want to use the ECU, I want to ship it back to you and get a replacement. I have no faith to do the wiring myself  . Can you send me a shipping label on eBay or here? Or my Email: Cheerioov2@gmail.com

Thank you so much for helping me out!

I will get @BeerMoneyMotorsports a bit involved here: first I will ship him your future replacement board for validation on his Miata.

Hey Cheerio! A couple of things needed from you.

1- With your stock ecu, you are probably experiencing an issue related to the TPS. They are different from manual to auto. You should actually be able to use the auto ecu even though its a manual car. That is how i have always done them.

2- Please take some really good pictures of the rusEFI board. Maybe we will be able to clearly see the problem.

3- Screenshot of the log from the console

4- link to your tune(upload it to rusEFI Online)

5- other than the transmission and the ecu, did you change anything else?

I look forward to getting you on the road again!!

Sounds good. Yes, the NA6 AUTO trans cars used vtps. Manual trans na6 was an on/off switch basically. 94 and up are all vtps.

Was a really busy month :(
Anyway, got everything you guys needed in the link below, the screenshot of the live message from the console, and pictures of the ECU.

I don't know if I did the tune upload correctly, but here is everything I have.
The link to my tune is here: https://rusefi.com/online/view.php?msq=529

Besides the transmission swap, everything should be stock.

I'm in Miami. Yes, I can! I want to get it fixed soon! Wanted to have her on road for so long :!:
Can I have the shipping info, if you want you can send it to my email: cheerioov2@gmail.com
Or post it here, either way, works for me. So am I missing a resistor or something?

Got the trigger fixed. Nevermind the popping and farting, this car is way different than a stock miata but has the same trigger.

Re: 1993 Manual Swapped NA6 Miata

So, I received the ECU yesterday and tested it on my car today. The car starts and runs. The idle speed is stable at around 1k, but I can tell the engine has more vibration than nomarl. So I checked the AFR which is running at 16.7 which is too lean (I believe). As I was trying to do some tunning to the AFR target table, I found the table can't be put into values more than 1.5. I messed around with the VE table, no luck there, made it worse. I wanted to use the autotune feature on tunnerstudio. I think it requires the AFR table so it can adjust the VE table accordingly.

My question is, how do I fix the too lean situation here? How do I adjust the AFR target table?
Below is the google drive data log I did today.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10nUBpB3unESy6rJkX8h3RRYySGZPItXc?usp=sharing

Thanks again for helping me!

My problem here is I can't change the numbers in the target AFR table. The number was stuck under 1.5, I can put 0.8, 0.9, etc. but nothing above 1.5
I wanted to use the autotune feature, but I'm not sure I can use it with the AFR table like this. From my understanding, the autotune will adjust the VE table accordingly to match the real AFR to the Target AFR.

So, can you help me with this situation? Is there some setting blocking me adjust the AFR table?

Attached is the screenshot.

Ah - that bug. It's since been fixed. Your firmware has broken switching between lambda and AFR - that's actually a target lambda table. Go ahead and update your firmware (and tunerstudio ini) and it should work ok.

Hey guys, so I was messing around with the Tunerstudio and trying to get the autotune working. But suddenly the car just won't start. Attached is the message I got from the Console. I had the updated ini file loaded in the Tunerstudio, but the firmware version on the ECU is still at 2021/3/14. So I tried to update the firmware and it failed. Attached is the message I got. I swapped the ECU back to the factory ones, it starts. So the problem is within the Board.

BTW, the updated ini file has the correct target AFR table I wanted instead of the lambda table.

You have https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/Miata-NA-48-pin-board-for-MRE right?

So Frankenso suite is not relevant for you and your board does not have ST-Link, your board would be updated using DFU option.

Your nightly bundle is https://rusefi.com/build_server/rusefi_bundle_mre_f4.zip

this link uses universal bundle not microRusEFI bundle. that's not intended project type in your case. While universal has some usages with microRusEFI it's increasing your risks of invalid configuration tenfold.

Great! First thing is a new bug which does not seem to be affecting you https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/issues/2821

Second could be missing driver. What does Device Manager show? do you see "DFU device" something in Device Manager? did you have a chance to install drivers embedded into console?

Hi! So, my board is Miata NA 48 pin board for MRE. I installed the drivers embedded in the console, but I can't see a DFU device in the device manager. I do see a "other device" catagroy that contains STM32 Bootloader. Where do I download the proper DFU driver and the latest version of the consel? Thank you for all the help!

Did you have a chance to try the "install drivers" button on rusEFI console splash screen?

Console bundle includes "drivers\silent_st_drivers.exe" file

I did that multiple times already. I can connect the board to the console but still, can't update the board. The console I'm running is 20210523 rusefi_bundle_mre_f4 version. I chose auto DFU when I tried to update.
