Benzmaxing CLK 320 5.0

Post by augenblick »

Because I don't have any sense whateversoever, I'm disimproving another car.

It's a 2001 (2000?) W208 CLK 320 with a M112 V6. I was going to M104 swap it eventually, but after some measuring, I've realized it's going to be way easier and cheaper to V8 swap it to get maybe the same power. Depending on budget and what I can source, it's either going to be a big case 722.6 with aftermarket TCM or a crossfire manual transmission behind a 5L M113 V8 (most likely 99-05 ish S500)

Facelift ECMs are not the same plug or case as Hellen128. They are the same plug as E46 MS43, but completely different pinout. The current plan is to convert a pre-facelift V6 engine harness to fit a M113 V8, and repin the body side plugs. Hopefully this can be done without chopping any wires on the body side. I believe other than Jimmy's frankenwiring, this will be the highest pin usage scenario for a Hellen128, so I'm a bit excited about pushing the boundary. Also, the stock setup uses ECM trigger engine starting so that will be neat too.

Right now the plan is to build the engine side harness, test it on a potato motor in my garage (01 CLK430 motor with a completely unknowable history), repin the body side, then swap in a 5L motor.

Below is a scratch pad of the pin swaps between the 2 ME2.8 body side plugs and the 4 ME2.0/1 plugs. I've labelled the ME2.8 Plugs as A/B to match ME2.0/1 but they actually correspond to C4 & C5 plugs on the wiki, and I believe X60004/X60005 on MS43 pinouts. Also 5/6 pins for the O2 sensors are in what I've taken to calling the green Ooops plug in the module box. I think they can safely be ignored if using Hellen's WBO2.

The actual harness for this application is fairly rare, it's a one year only configuration, 99 CLK430. Right now I've got a 98-99 E320 Harness, 98-99 CLK320, 00-02 CLK320, 00-02 CLK430. Just laying the 98/99 CLK320 harness on top of the CLK430 motor revealed a problem, the harness is laid out kind of in a spiral, and crosses over on the front of the engine. Even if I put the harness in the plastic routing bracket from a V8 motor, half the INJ/IGN plugs and atleast the front grounds would be in the wrong location. If you're willing to do some chop, none of this an issue, but the goal here is to find the laziest way to convert a V6 facelift car into something that just plugs in to a Hellen with a V8.

Casually laying out the 2 V6 early harnesses, it looks like the W210 E-Class harness is ~2-4 longer than the CLK. I think based on that, my options are either re-pinning a facelift V8 harness, which might involve chopping a handful of pins and crimping on a different pin type, using a pre-facelift E430 harness, and just kind of curling up the extra length inside the module box, or cutting open most of the prefacelift CLK320 harness, and running my own wires for the right hand side bank. The upside of using the frankenharness is I can use facelift TB and CKP plugs which are way cheaper and easier to work with.

Also on my TODO list is to put a write-up on the wiki on how to de-facelift 00-05 Benz.
