FutureProof Performance E30 Drift Car

Post by Simon@FutureProof »

We have been meaning to get something up about the car for most of this year but launching FPP and the shear amount of work running a car at this level takes has delayed things a bit.
That said we took 3rd place in Drift League GB at the weekend so it is high time we got something posted.

The car was built around 2015 and run with mixed success and many engine problems. Starting in 2021 we began to work out some of the issues engine side but life and the tail end of covid cut things short.
Come winter 2021 we really got stuck in and at the start of 2022 launched FutureProof Performance.

The car started 2022 with a fresh Proteus ECU, Some trick prototype steering modifications and and a freshly mapped engine making ~500hp.

Lots more to say but time is currently short, will add some updates soon as possible.

I see you're disguising it as a modern BMW with the under-bonnet density

Is that the car mentioned at https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/Case-Studies as Team Driftweiser?

Wow, looks like a lot of effort was put into this build. Exciting to see rusEFI used on it!

It is indeed, It began life as Team Driftweiser and it's undecided if we roll it all under the FPP roof or leave a little separation for business/sponsorship reasons. Either way it's very very attached to FPP.
I believe the video there was 2021? If so, first time out with a rusEFI unit.

We have had quite a bit more time to get things right for this year and thus far things are going relatively smoothly.

Effort wise... things have been crazy, so far this year we have done a drift demo at castle combes german show, 4 rounds of drift league, a test day, a gender reveal (yeah really) and are booked in for drift league round 5, some promotional stuff for WF supplies and possibly a demo at Silverstones Trax show.

rusEFI wise, the change of ECU and mapping work picked up +50hp and equivalent torque at the wheels, while giving the car reliability engine wise that it has never had before.
The Proteus is currently running the Cryo intercooler, water meth injection and ETB. Continuous data logging has allowed us to monitor things like we couldn't with the previous ECU.

Dragged some older photos out from the archives of when it was first built and wearing less scratches.

Where did you mount the ECU? Do you run any CAN-based gauges?

water meth injection
That's the first meth injection claim running rusEFI. Any details? GPPWM or Lua or combination or else?

And the most important couple, rusEFI powering to a 3rd place finish.

Proteus is passenger footwell mounted for now, may be moved over winter if/when the interior is redone.

Water meth is simply a high side triggering a solid state relay to PWM the meth pump.
Just set up on a GPPWM table to vary the rate with the map pressure and RPM.
Slightly crude but equal to any other controller on the market, there has not been the time to do anything smarter and it has been working OK so far.

Yep, and I don't think it has had any changes to the meth since then (appart from enabling it on high-side 1).

That style of setup should work for most meth setups, the majority pwm the pump to control the meth flow.
Its not great as low flow rates are very poor atomisation due to low pressures.

Ideal is to have a pump, regulator and per cylinder meth nozzle or injector but that is only on big dollar systems.

Our driver did a bit of a write up of round 4 for the website, thought I would cross post it over here for some insight into what running these cars is like.

https://www.futureproofperformance.com/post/round-4-seat-time

Things are looking quite busy for the next few weeks, the car is due to be displayed for the incoming MSc students up at the university as we intend to run some projects for them on it, after that it is straight off to round five at 3 sisters raceway to close the season out.
