BMW E30 M20 Turbo Build

Post by classicdaily »

Hey all. I posted on the Facebook group but want to here as well. I run a vintage BMW shop in Michigan. Classicdaily.net ...find us on FB and IG.
I have been starting to use rusefi to make PNP and other boards to modernize old BMWs. The base of this current project is my 89 BMW 325. It is currently running a PNP board running rusefi firmware. In the coming weeks I will be turboing it and documenting all of it on you tube.

Really happy with the firmware so far. Some UI tweeks I can see being needed but it works so well.

Most will be posted on youtube but I will cross post here as I dig in more. This is more of a hello here I am sorta post.

Going from Tuner studio to Mega log viewer there are some differences in how the PIDs are arranged. I really like the Idea of the tree system that is in affect for some things.

IE:
Fuel: Fuel rate
Fuel: TPS acceleration
etc

But then there are some items that just live on their own. IE. TPS, AFR, Air/Fuel Ratio (why is this listed twice?) Are these added with Megalog viewer and not actually from the TS log? Either way it gets confusing to find things. Same in TS. The "More gauges" have a lot of things that most users would want front and center. Also seeing that there are some differences in the layout for the available gauges based on the firmware version.

I REALLY like the Tree method and that is something I haven't seen from other firmware and EFI setups like this.

I would see something like:
Sensors:
Fueling:
Boost Control:
EGO Control:
Ignition:

Also not sure it is possible but having a way to have different user levels in TS would be awesome. A basic tuning only setting would be nice. Or a drop down that has the core tuning things. As once you have dialed starting, and basic things in most are spending their time tuning only a handful of tables.
Tuning:
--FUEL VE
--IGNITION ADVANCE
--IDLE TUNING
--TEMP MODIFIERS
--ETC

These are just ideas and far from needed. I look very much at the end user. Some users want to play with the ecu/etc but many just want to tune their car. The former will be on these forums and groups the later is a much bigger market and the experience/UI needs to be dead simple and easy for them. I do think that is where others....speeduino in particular really shine. It's easy. Similar to the iPhone vs Android debate. While you can DO more with the android the iPhone just works to do the thing.

I would love to help with some of the UI aspects of rusefi.

Mega log viewer flat list of our hundreds of data points is a sore point for sure.

Technically efianalytics agrees with it and they've already made progress - internally these logs already have "category" attribute but no UI for it at the moment and ETA is unclear. Meaning let me make my own progress :)

Great points! Hard to solve it all at once but let's attempt making ten bytes of progress every day. I can use your help with more specific lines to address in the order in which those are important for you.

"categories for logs" let's track this under https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/issues/5153 which tells me you need a github account to comment. Today progress is https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/commit/f974df0da700a984a956b13272d6a1251d6ecc02

https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/issues/5154 created for "different user levels in TS" idea

By the way is relevant as a safety layer for you https://rusefi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=47294#p47294
