1972 midget with THE sauce

Post by inert_goose »

hi im sebastian and i have 1972 mg midget that we have absolutely reamed out to put a k24 in place of the original 1275. the car was a rescue i purchased it for $800.00 it was completely torn apart i put it back together and drove it till the water pump failed (70ish miles) and decided to engine swap it. first thought was a 1000cc engine from a street bike but decided i wanted to have FAST midget and we went with a Honda k24.
our current motor set up is a k24a8 block and lower end and a head off of a k24z3 for the 4 into 1 manifold integrated into the head to clear the passenger foot well. we have a s2000 intake manifold to clear the driver footwell as well. our transmission is a na miata 5 speed and we used a k power industries adapter plate flywheel and hydraulic release bearing so that we could save space in the trans tunnel. we fully rebuilt the suspension with full polly and uprated springs all around. we have just started the motor up recently and are very excited to see how it drives soon. thank you guys for reading. some midget content for yall ;)

Welcome and thank you for amazing content!

Does vtec on K require high-current high-side control? How are you doing that with microRusEFI?

Hi, Im the blond guy in the images above. I've helped @captainavi with his Kswap Mr2 and now have helped Inert Goose with his Midget. We aren't using the cam sensors for triggering at all yet (it should be possible). I'd love to see vtec working on the mre, The car has a solid state relay setup that could be helpfull. Im uploading the tune to RusEfi online soon.

Glad we got this working. Tunes from the MR2 got this running.
We don't have VTEC working yet. We have solid state relays for the VTEC high-current so when we decide to set that up we should be fine.

Also with our motor combination we are unsure if we can run vtec. there is minimal information about putting the z3 head on a stock a8 bottom end and it seems that no one know wether vtec will cause rapid unplanned disassembly we will probably put one of the vtec pins in locking the rockers and turn the motor over by hand some day but for now I don't think we need the hp considering the car weights sub 1500 lbs.

Well we seem to have hit a road block with our ecu.
Non of the non essential an volt pins seem to be working properly.
I couldn't get the 02 sensor to read at all. This prompted me to take the ecu out of the car and bench test it.
I have noticed that all of the aux reuse pins are acting the same and wont get a reading. They act different to all of the functioning an volts. (tps, app, etc..). I posted the results of the testing in slack. Which I will repost here.
When I connect either to 5v or 12v i get a readout on rusefi console of 0.08v
When I connect to ground i get a reading of 0.
When the pin is Floating I get a value of 0.05.
I feel like there is something obvious that im missing or miss understanding. Id like to have a functioning 02 sensor and a start/stop engine button.
Please advice.

There are those 0R resistors which control aux input vs aux output right? Which exact channels are you trying to use as aux input?

I did not realize that this was a thing. Sorry I forgot to tell you the exact pins. I tested a bunch of pins but the original setup that wasn't working was Pin 40-AN Volt 9 and Pin 32- AN Volt 6. I was using them for start/stop button and 02 sensor respectively.

Thank you so much Andrey for the lead on the resistors. The board schematic and my board were off. All i did was unsolder the resistors and I had perfectly working An Volt inputs. Either by this or next weekend, The midget should be running better than ever.

On the schematics notes it says "AV6 AND AV10 ARE ANALOG since R86 and R85 are NOT populated"
"AV8 AND AV9 ARE DIGITAL OUTPUTS since R30 and R84 are populated"

https://github.com/rusefi/hw_microRusEfi/blob/master/gerbers/R0.6.0/micro_rusEFI.2022-04-09.csv but on bill of material it looks like only R86 is not populated in reality meaning only AV6 is analog by default? that's even that BOM matches your board. Yes it's a mess :(

I should have clarified that my board had all the resistors for av6,av10,av8 and av9. I removed av6 and av9 resistor. However, I had no problems on the bench feeding those pins voltage and reading it on tuner studio (zero when it should be and 5v when fed). When I put it in the car im now getting 3.3 volts at both of those pins consistently. Did I configure tuner studio differently? Is there any reason that there is voltage to these pins? Im extremely confused. I plan on using a resistor for the 12v engine start stop button.

Well, This long saga seems to have come to an end. I'm not quite sure why but its all good now. I looked through the whole ls output section of all the aux resuse pin's. Turns out that the schematics and my board off and the supposed solutions didn't quite work (0 ohm resistors and the 6.8k). I ended up removing the whole low side output section from my board. This includes both VNLD5090's and the connections to the TLE8888QK. Once I removed everything I got the readings to show up in tuner studio and the floating 3.3 volts to go away. There is probably a simpler fix or something I am doing wrong. I'd love to hear an explanation.

here is a link to a video of it running and a quick little walk around. The clacking noise is poorly adjusted valves will be doing a lash job soon:}
