Greetings

Post by Vanquizor »

Hey- this is an interesting project you have going on... hopefully I can help out by playing the role of tester here. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a coder, and I can barely understand circuit diagrams, but I know what it takes to make a motor run and am very good at troubleshooting. I live close enough to my work that I'm willing to experiment on a daily driven car and have enough spares that I'm willing to risk equipment on theoretical code. I have run mega squirt on a daily driver and competition vehicles so I guess I'm not a total novice.

Since there is now a driving car I figured it is an appropriate time to pop in and say HI... and if there is a specific test you want or need completed I have a spare dodge neon in the garage gathering dust! Also its -20C this week and likely on and off for the next month or 2 so cold weather testing is definitely on the table.

Hey there :)

What we need most right now is people who would be capable of wiring up all this to a car and start the engines. Ideally you should also be capable of soldering the boards - but I guess we can figure something out with the soldering if if worse comes to worst.

You are either looking to solder the same set up boards I have at hardware status or if you want to start with a smaller step you can start by wiring up enough stuff to get a tachometer like here

Both projects would get you to the shopping list

Soldering is not an issue. It would be most convenient if there was a Mouser or Digikey BOM for the project or each module of the project. I'd like to keep my components as identical to yours as possible.

I knew this day would come but I was really hoping it would be some time next year, or the year after next year.

Good news it's not that many components - other than a 4000pcs bag of 1206 and a ~1000pcs bag of 0806, it's just one mosfet and one amplifier.

Another nuance on the way to 'as identical as possible' would be the fact that I am using current 0.1 revisions which are knows to be good enough but also known to have some small kinks. The 0.2 revisions are supposed to be better, but technically these were not tested yet.

If you are ready to make this step, the first place to go would be http://oshpark.com/profiles/rusefi - you would need one of the 'Adc Amp' designs (the second one is on the second page) and the 6 channel mosfet board. I suggest you start there simply because this would take the longest to be shipped - they are waiting till they have a larger order & then they wait for the board to get back to them...

You would need to flip a coin :)
the smaller one is known to work but it also has some known minor issues, and it's smaller (i.e. cheaper)
The "12ch rev 0.2" is supposed to be a better design and it would give you more channels, but no one has used it yet. Either there is no simple answer or I tend to over-think too often :)

10x2 2.54 header - the black thing in the top-left corner, half a dozen of them.
2x1 5.08 screw-in terminals like the blue ones?
3x1 5.08 screw-in terminals like the green one?
VNS14NV04 mosfets if they have these?

It looks like mouser is in between already not selling the older VNS14NV04 edition and not yet selling the newer VNS14NV04P-E - I know digikey still has the retiring VNS14NV04

2nd discovery in case you burn the first one OR when you decide you want one in the car and another on a bench? Anything from the http://rusefi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=212 ?
LMV324IDR - that's the quad op-amp in 14-SOIC you would need for the input board?

I've extracted the Neon stuff into a separate thread

Digikey BOM is probably not much of an issue. I've been putting such information in the schematic symbols, which means a BOM can be created by simply exporting the BOM when in the schematic. In the schematic symbols, I generally put in fields for the MFG and MFG, as well as one supplier typically Digikey and Digikey #.

I'm curious what your connector is, and what you intend to wire? Are you thinking of wiring direct to the injectors, or are you thinking of wiring to an OEM harness? Also what wheel decoder do you have? I'm assuming some kind of skipped tooth. Is it VR or hall? Also what kind of ignition, coil per cyl, or distributor, CDI or traditional coil? Basically what's the hip bone and leg bone kind of stuff. I can probably customize this a bit to make it easier for you to use if I know more about what you are attempting.

I'll split my specific install stuff from the general all neon stuff in the other thread.

Right now I'm thinking I'll install using an overlay harness using russefi as a stand alone- that way if I run into issues I can just unplug the rusefi connectors and plug the factory ecu back in. I am not married to that solution and could also intercept the factory harness where the engine and chassis harnesses meet in a single connector, or at the ecu connector on the chassis harness.

Good news- fedex dropped off a package from Mouser this morning. I didn't have time to play with it before going to work though...

Good news indeed!

There is a tiny manual on programming the board with our firmware & installing the needed drivers.
