Greetings

Post by blundar »

Saw this on HaD and came by.

I've been working with reverse engineering + tuning OEM EFI systems since 2002. I've been doing performance tuning or working with automotive engine management systems for a living since 2005. I currently work for http://www.moates.net doing a mixture of tech support, training and product development and also have my own business in which I tune cars.

I currently own a 2005 Ford F350 turbo diesel V8, an integra with a built moderately hot (~225hp) naturally aspirated 2L Honda engine, a civic with a CRV motor to drive around. I hope to play with a GenIV LS smallblock on the next project.

I'm really sharp with engine management. I've tuned Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Ford, GM, Chrysler, VW, BMW engines. I can code, strongest with AVR assembly and embedded C. I know enough VHDL and Verilog to make CPLDs that suit my needs. I'm really good with PCB design, although I use primarily Eagle. (want to learn KiCad, just haven't had time yet)

I don't have a ton of time right now though. :( Have two kids (3+6) and I'm trying to wind up a few projects of my own, including a STM32F417 based Chibios-Powered CANbus sniffer. I am really excited by what I see here and hope to be able to help in some ways.

Welcome along.

Diesel you say. I've been looking to play with common rail high pressure stuff, but don't have equipment. I've drafted / simulated a couple circuits that could make the high voltage kick required to open those injectors, but haven't made it yet. If you have interest in playing with such a thing, feel free to let me know.

Also about the CAN sniffer, you may find this circuit interesting. It's a low cost CAN to USB circuit. I've built it with off the shelf parts. http://code.google.com/p/daecu/source/browse/#svn%2FHardware%2Ftrunk%2FKICAD_Project_CTU

Seems they were right when they said that kids take a lot of time and $. I'm in the same boat, two little ones about 3.5 and 5.5 years old.
Welcome to the friendlier side of internet crazy :)

Thanks for the welcome.

My truck is the last generation HEUI (high pressure oil) before common rail hit. My next truck will probably be common rail because well... everything is common rail now because it's awesome. Maybe once I have another "reliable" truck (*cough* you can't quite use "reliable" in the same sentence as a Ford 6L diesel...) I'll go ahead and play with it. Not for now. :)

I took a look at your website. You've done some really neat stuff. I'm impressed.

I'll check out the circuit. The current project is much more like a STM32F4Discovery board with a few extra CAN ports and a SD card for logging.

My oldest will be 7 in Feb and my youngest 4 in June. About the same boat, for sure.

Trust me - there is hope at the end of this tunnel. It is SO much easier when they are 7 + ~9.
