forced induction experiments on engine stand

Post by AndreyB »

Green race miata and red test mule miata both have their logistical and scheduling constraints.
I want to practice my fabrication skills.
I have a lot of spare parts in the garage.
I want to build something forced-induction.

Solution? Let's build a perfect engine stand with fuel tank & muffler and slap some force induction onto that engine.

First milestone: welding a fuel tank.

The goal here is to practice my fabrication skills including welding, so no fun in buying anything small on eBay.

First attempt: a box welded of some scrap roofing metal panels. Result: fail - it leaks :( lesson leaned: thin painted metal is not grear for liquid-tight DIY containers.

Well, let's try ordering thicket clean metal cut to my sizes online and weld a water-tight box as a test.

Dimentions 4x6 inches, internet says paint thinner floats better so it's a better test liquid. And we have success - the box holds paint thinner and does not leak anywhere!

Metal thicknes 0.06" / 16 ga. / 1.29mm

Do you intend on adding some sort of load to the engine or just letting it spin freely?

This is similar to something my dad wanted to do with a straight 6 engine from a Triumph Vitesse that he has sitting around, sort of a moving ornament! He wasn't intending on tuning it or anything, just start it up and watch it go, maybe he would let me add a rusEFI to it if I ever get around to ordering the components again!

Load is not easy at all, so the plan is

Are you concerned about your neighbors in the adjacent sardine can? AKA exhaust noise will likely be of concern.

Forced induction is great fun! So much fun that rusEFI has the power to make my clutch eat itself! And get power oversteer!

looks like a first april joke.
load is not that difficult, may be? attaching some high-capacity alternators and some a set of boilers in series might be a nice load?

I never joke about forced induction.

After two weld repairs it holds first gallon of thinner! The paper towel under the tank is dry everywhere :)

8x8x10 inches. Next step getting two more gallons of paint thinner (I was not expecting to get this far!) and cutting the whole for fuel sender in what would be the top piece.

You don't need more thinner, put a few bricks or something in to make the thinner you have reach the top ;)

OMG you are right! Change of plans - I go with a few bricks.
