EcoBoost V2 in Jerry (Miata NA 1.6) #47

Post by Thommm »

New project! (like 3 other project cars are enough  )

So I saw a friend of mine posted his old Miata racecar for cheap and it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. So I went there and got it for even a bit less (cause I wasn't going to scrap it and it was going to a "good home"). Picked it up with my grandpa's sweet old 530 turbo diesel:

Small caveat:
It's missing: the engine, gearbox, diff, driveshaft, fuel pump and the cluster. Oh, and the brakes are shot. Great stuff for a project car! I still have a 1.8 NBFL "big brake" kit which needs a rebuild, the drivetrain will come from RusEFI car #19 and the fuel pump will need an upgrade anyways.

The plan (theflyingdutchp has already had a big spoiler :P ):
  • Twin GT1752 spooled sequentially (parallel, not compounded)
  • up the compression, aiming for 10.5-11
  • run as much passive cooling after the turbo's as possible to keep IATs low (and high IAT during cruise)
  • use water - ethanol during boost
  • experiment with cooled EGR (optional)
  • a big want: mount an LPG setup (because cheap fuel and high octane)
I'm going to throw as much engineering knowledge at this as I can to make it an efficient setup.

Goals:
  1. Flat torque curve from 2500 to 6000RPM
  • Cruise fuel economy: at least 14km/l (33MPG)
  • Good drivability --> decent NVH, workable in slow traffic (which my turbo Smurf isn't....)
  • Have two turbo's on a 1.6 Miata!
I'm kinda late in starting this topic so I'll post another 2-3 posts in the coming hours/days

I also see a beautiful towing vehicle. Is it a manual? :)

Of course life happens, I blew my kid brothers car while tuning it. I'm glad it's not my fault, he insisted in replacing the headgasket with a cheap original a month ago (when he blew it) and also supplied the single cheapest bolts he could find. Kids: if you ever have a BMW M20 2.0 liter being boosted by more than 1.5bar (it was trucking like a m**cker while tunig): MLS/O-ring the block and use ARP's, please.

Shit happens.

Progress in Jerry: removed all of the crappy wiring that was in the car, the wiring behind the thombstone (the thing in the middle of the dash) looked like it had been hit by a cluster bomb and was taped/hot glued back together. Got all of that out (will just redo from scratch, neater and quicker) and vacuumed the whole car. He already looks a lot better. Will add a photo later, but it's just a Miata without seats and a tidy carpet.

Initial inspection: pretty much rust free (one of the big reasons why I bought him), most parts are there (mostly not attached though), subframes look OK (visual), hydraulics from the brake system are fine (two calipers stuck, other two calipers are in a box :P), wiring is not very original (will need work).

You are fast my friend! How have you been doing? I saw a great deal of updates in the last firmware update (I hadn't updated for like 1.5 years) so you (and the rest?) have been busy with RusEFI!

The tow vehicle is an automatic 3.0L turbo diesel, but it has tiptronic (shifting the box manually through the trans computer (EGS)). It almost dragged a Ford Fiesta turbo while towing the Miata, it spun the rear tires causing traction control to cut power... Love that car, been doing the maintenance on it for the last 4-5 years, it has almost half a million kilometers on the clock (original engine + trans).

Progress: manifold is done, still need to sketch how I'm going to run the setup a bit nicer than a rough whiteboard sketch :)

Quite happy with it, two turbos and the steering pump is still in the original location.

The wastegate is being modified to run inverse to normal --> I need it to be normally open and closed under pressure.

Haven't fully worked out how to do this (from a practical standpoint, in theory it's easy). I'll have to mill a new holder for the diaphragm.

Engine is progressing as well. The rings have been gapped to 0.030 top and 0.034-ish bottom. The (forged) rods are in, bearings mounted. Just have to plastigauge the bearings to make sure they are OK (they feel OK  ).

Still have to work out how much combustion chamber volume I have, so that the head can be milled to a CR of ~10.5
