Yes, it was being set in TS. I didn't think to look there.

Hello, I'm trying to get this going again after a few years break. It's the same car, same Frankenstein board, new Discovery board, new firmware as of 3/3/20 and new console. Everything else should be the same, engine_type 21. I tried cranking and didn't get any puffs. Tried warming up on stock ecu and trying again, still no life. Anything fundamental change in 4 years? :-) I'm sure there are lots of improvements!

I see this error on trigger:

WARNING: trigger not happy current 2/4/0 expected 4/8/0

Here are logs. Thanks for the help!

For such problem statement I believe rusEfi console "Engine Sniffer" is the best first layer of diagnostics. Does it show expected trigger signal? Does it try to command coils and igniters in an expected way?

Cranking enrichment scale could have changed (% to multiplier or multiplier to %)

This engine sniffer does not seem very happy - note the crazy difference between coil #1 and coil #3

Also https://rusefi.com/wiki/index.php?title=Manual:Software:Trigger#Mazda_Miata_NA seems a bit inverted to what we have in engine sniffer.

I have to confess that we have a mess with normal versus inverted which is really depending on the hardware used (I believe MAX9926 common schematics is producing signal inverted in relation to op-amp hall input)

i would like to suggest to enable flipping of trigger inputs. A proper solution would be automatically saying "dude your signals are INVERTED?!"

How about:

Ok, I flipped the signals in TS and it looks a little better. I get a few puffs and another error:

WARNING: sync error: index #12 above total size 12

I'm slowly remembering the debug steps...

Can you please attach your tune as well?

It looks like "set engine_type 21" sets your fuel algorithm to MAP-based speed density? But your log file shows zero MAP sensor reading?

Do you have MAP on this car? Are you trying to run MAP/Speed Density or MAF-based simple table lookup?

@AndreyB asked me to do some testing on my NA Miata to confirm (or not) what is happening here. So I immediately jumped into action and stayed on my sofa.
But I did hook up a rusefi to a JimStim simulating an NA Miata. Result with firmware from September 2019:
September 2019 FW
September 2019 FW

And this is what we get with a copy of today's firmware:
March 2020 FW
March 2020 FW
NA6 cranking new FW.png (46.56 KiB) Viewed 12429 times
The inversion argument seems to have a point.

I now also get all errors in the log:

Code: Select all

2020-03-07_23_11_04_679: EngineState: time=383 index=0: gap=1.001 expected from 0.895 to 1.940 error=Yes
2020-03-07_23_11_04_777: EngineState: time=383 index=0: gap=0.999 expected from 0.895 to 1.940 error=Yes
2020-03-07_23_11_04_884: EngineState: time=383 index=0: gap=0.994 expected from 0.895 to 1.940 error=Yes
Funny enough, 0.944 seems to be larger than 0.895 and smaller than 1.940.

We have un-flipped it back :) So please un-flip it.

Back to MAP vs MAF and running after puffing.

Today was busy, but I tried it again tonight.

I updated firmware to today's version. Switched back the flippin' trigger sensor settings. And cranked it a fairly long time and SUCCESS! It started with some coaxing and ran for a few minutes collecting logs with java console. It runs fairly smooth except for what sounds like a miss every 5 seconds or so. I switched to TS, and adjusted idle control down to about 30% to about 1000 rpm, and it idles ok.

Thanks Andrey and @stefanst, y'all are awesome!

This is MAF based, no MAP installed. WBO is not hooked up either, I'll do that next.
There is another warning: WARNING: out-of-order coil off coil1
Here are logs and current tune. No tuning done yet, just default values.
