just checking various ecu connectors and the pinouts: is there any guideline on wiring all those pins, like grouping high-current pins (injectors), grounds, signal pins, etc.
Motronic engine computer for the VR6 (AAA code) and 4 cylinder 2.0 (ABA code) engines. Wiring is substantially similar between all 4 engines, with differences noted below.
Bosch manufactures this system. The OBD1 system is called Motronic M2.9 (M2.9.1 for engines with coil pack), and OBD2 is called Motronic M5.9.

I wonder if there is any risk in drilling the board in terms of GND layer touching VCC layer on the sharp edges of the hole?

I wonder if these wires would be enough. These are eBay jumper wires of unknown gauges, right? At least ground wires should be probably thicker.

22-24 AWG

5A to 8.73A is a thermal limit, and an absolute minimum. As well that's a very high estimate. UL486E puts that around 2 to 3 amps. I see the voltage drop would be about .25V for this short length of wire. As fuel injectors and such turn on and off, it will cause your GND signals to vary which will cause your analog signals to vary as injectors turn on and off.
ignition is HL1 or what ever HL you need. This does not drive the coil directly, you need an ignitor. The HL is for high or low driver. The high side can be configured for 12V or 5V. Your OEM VW coil probably has the ignitor integrated into the coil, but it might not.

Yes ignitor integrated into the coil ...

Is the signal 5V or 12V? You will have to configure the HL driver to driver to the proper high level. There is a jumper that needs to be installed.

I need to add a note to this wiki. See P602 and P604. Install jumper across P604 to make this a 12V high side drive.
