AEB 1.8T

My end goal is to get my 1999 Passat AEB 1.8T running rusEFI! Until then I'll collect all important data I can find and house it here to help anyone else.

Also, this is a learning process for me! If you see I am lacking some important data let me know so i can go gather it!

Engine Specs:
Compression Ratio: 9.5:1
toothed 60-2 wheel
Hall sensor/CPS - 1 Window
NO MAP

Fueling:
48PSI Pump or 58 w/o vac
Injectors 210cc @ 3bar or 242cc @ 4bar
02 sensor - narrow band
MAF - 187g/s MAX
Fuel Table MAF + Load driven

~Other~
AIT Sensor
CTS
N75 - Driven by TPS and Engine load - Controls wastegate
[*]Used to control the sharp boost curve of small turbo
[*]Can be replaced with MBC but caution should be advised as lean condition could occur. Plus torque spikes are bad! However, RusEFI could allow the introduction of a wideband O2 for monitoring.

To get it idling for the first time you would not need MAF or MAP - you would just guess the amount of fuel needed. Narrow band o2 works for OEM because they know their engine, we do not so wide band o2 would probably be needed.

We have another VW so the trigger shape is known (it's not the 'real' 60-2 if you ask me but it does not matter)

You would probably need an ECU connector unless you want to cut your harness which I guess you would not want to do. And you would need a board and some time to get all this together. What is your goal with this by the way? :)

Figured I would need a wideband. Actually I was hoping I could code in a MAP and Wideband! Definitely not looking to do that, but I can get a junk ECU and desolder the connector I believe.

Just to learn really, what better way to learn about engines? Maybe once I become in the know I could work to get some more zip out of my car! (provided I don't melt the pistons or throw a rod)

Looks like a good platform, it can be done. I think most of the real obstacles will be getting the wires connected. What are the goals? Some times people think they can make a poor engine run better if they can tune the EFI, but often the issue is that the engine needs repair. So I wonder what's the goal?

Sounds like standard for either frankenso, or Frankenstein. More research could produce some need to modify, like alternator control, or some misc intake valves.

Well when I got the car I had to put in an entire new gear box. This required picking the engine so well it was out I did a good lookover! (word of advice engine cranes shouldnt be used on grass..) Engines nice and clean, she runs fantastic!

For awhile I wanted to get it tuned and the works, however being a University student this wasn't realistic. So goals now? Learn. Better defined I want to get the engine running first. Then make it an enjoyable drive-able machine!

I suggest getting something like http://www.ebay.com/itm/231618298692 just to destroy and it re-use the ECU connector with your own wires soldered to it.

Exactly what I was thinking, nice and cheap!

I'm still looking into exactly how the Ignition system works on my engine. I believe its referred to as a "batch" system. I have an ICM that feeds the coils. I'm reading more up on it as we speak.

Yup heat it up, smash the PCB against a tree such that the PCB goes flying into the woods and the connector stays in your hands :) This doesn't actually work this way, but you get the idea, and you end up with a low cost connector and enclosure. I wonder the length and width of that enclosure, and if Frankenso or Frankenstein would fit in it.

I used to have one of those, but forget the details. I scrapped the car when the timing belt snapped. About the turbo, does that have electronic control of some sort? As well is that drive by wire? Mine was drive by wire, and the turbo did most of the air flow control. AKA the flap was basically open, and the turbo would vary the pressure which would vary the HP. I seem to recall the turbo was solenoid driven. So we might need to address some lacking software, as well you'll probably need an add-on board for H-Bridge.

University student you say, what was the flavor of study? Mechanical, Electrical, other?

Ouch! Yeah your system was a B5.5. I have the older varient. Larger ports but smaller stock injectors and a 16ms pulse cap on my ECU :(. Also drive by cable! I believe you're thinking of the N75 valve. It's not a necessity with a manual boost controller as far as I know at this point. The ECU pulses it at high frequencies to control the waste gate and smooth out the boost curve.

As for school I'm studying Physics and Computer science. So all this jazz for the most part ties right in!

I am looking forward to following this post. I have a 2002 New Beetle with an AWV that I think I am going to use this on. Perhaps we could bounce some ideas off of each other later on when we get into our builds.
