I think I just killed my Discovery board

Post by Simon@FutureProof »

As title, I think I may have just killed my discovery board but I'm not sure how....

I was putting it back into the car with the frankenso board bolted onto its PLASTIC base and somehow I must have touched the ratchet to something under the dash that is live even when the car is off. flash of sparks and now the discovery seems to be dead.

What I don't get is the Frankenso and Discovery are completely insulated from the mounting bolt, (the bolt is on the dash structure so is an earth point and I have no idea what was live, nothing should have been where I was working), the case is deliberately isolating the actual board from the dash structure so I don't quite understand how earthing out something via a bolt through a plastic tray has killed the discovery board but it appears to have happened.

The ST link side of the board will connect to the PC just fine but the Micro USB side no longer connects. The firmware is clearly not running anymore as the coloured lights between the the 2 sticks on the board are not lit and jumping the stimulator pins achieve nothing.
Worse than that if plugged into the frankenso board it lights the 5v power supply light, the crank signal light (didn't before) and one of the injector driver lights....

Am I correct in thinking that when I plug the micro USB into the PC I should get a com port appear? Cause I'm not getting one of those. :|

Any suggestions on debugging the Discovery boards to confirm the death?

Have a giant Norwegian blue... I can assure you its fine....

Does the Frankenso produce 5V?

When the discovery is completely disconnected from the frankenso, can you get it to program and turn on, blink lights etc?

Well the good news is everything has checked out ok and the Wiki repair notes were handy.

After a good bit of fault finding and checking things the problem turned out to be a little embarrassing, found a jumper in the footwell of the car...

Seems one of the jumpers didn't grip the pins on the Discovery very well and simply turning it over to mount it under the dash caused it to fall off.
Jumpers are now all stuck down with tape and all is well.

Was it one of the SWD jumpers where two of them are right next to each other?

Even worse...

JP1 that provides power to the MCU.

Does mean that I now have about 20 miles on the car on rusEFI so I'm uploading the rest of the pictures for the board build thread.

 Only Data logs for now, were still very rich low down and lean higher up. I will go through the logs and solve a few issues first, the tune is still not too pretty.
