Proteus Plug and Play board for Miata/MX5 NB2 (72 pins)

Post by Crazy Striker »

Hi folks !
I'm here to present you my first creation (at least the first one I developped from scratch) which is a 72 pins PnP adapter for the Proteus board for 2001-2005 Mazda Miata (or MX5).
It's equipped with the stock connector and can be equipped with two ampseal 23 pins connectors for extra features.
Basic features like MAP/AFR input are available through the unused pins on the OEM connector (9 of them).
There are leds to monitor state of :
4x Injectors
4x ignition outputs (2 OEM + 2 extended for full sequential)
Fan
Fuel pump
MAin relay
MIL/CEL
VVT
IAC
Alternator control
Tachometer

Two flyback diodes are present for IAC and VVT (even if not really needed for proteus V0.3)
The proteus board needs to be rev3.0 because some pins moved between 2.0 and 3.0.
Boards are not yet produced but as soon as proteus v0.3 is released i'll order them with some proteus assembled boards, and test them on my own NB2 miata.

Hi ! So big update on the board, as I received my Proteus last week I was able to solder one of them to the PnP adapter, using sawed off AMPSEAL connectors. This solution is far from ideal in terms of costs be we're still looking for cheaper alternatives.

The board has been plugged into the car and works well with a minor power supply adjustment (my 2004 miata has ECU power coming from main relay), only issue now is tuning and especially ensuring the timing is correct.
Here is a short video of engine running not so well but still running :

Are there plans to make this github public?

Gwendal how much can you help with https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/HOWTO-Miata-NB2-on-Proteus page can you make it a bit in the direction of other https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/Vault-of-Pnp-Vehicle-Pages ?

I am interested because I plan to wire a Proteus to my NB2 to run some knock tests. I think it would be best for me to repeat your pinout and build your tune into rusEFI firmware.

Do you know where to get more 72 pin connectors, or are you just stealing them off ECUs? Far as I can tell the 72 pin connector is out of stock everywhere and I'm not sure if more are being made without a 2500 piece order.

Here's what I've found. The missing connector housings are available, kinda, overseas only.

Hi all !

Sorry if I didn't reply fast enough, was waiting to see if major flaws were present on PnP board before releasing it.
Considering I daily the car since May, I consider the design to be ok for public release so here it is :

https://github.com/CrazyStriker/hw_PnProteus_72P_NB2

Feel free to fork, push and add issues to this repo.
It works as is. It is compatible with V0.3 and V0.4 Proteus.
About connection between Proteus and PnP adapter, best solution is still to hack up ampseal male connectors to expose pins on both sides.
About 72 pins connectors I got them directly from TE website.

About my car current config, I have a stock engine except a few things :
- I'm using a 36-1 Protege trigger wheel instead of stock 4 teeth trigger
- I'm using a 3 bars MAP sensor from Aliexpress. But you can use the OEM "Boost sensor" used for EGR as a MAP sensor. Calibration points are available online or in my tune on the barometric sensor settings.
- I'm using a SLC FREE 2 wideband controller and LSU 4.9. I'll probably switch controller soon depending on success of Matt's adventures.

My car topic is https://rusefi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1536&start=150&sid=863fa35d507b30f4ac748338d3bbc7e0

What about 3T Vehicle Speed Sensor?

As of couple of weeks ago Proteus firmware is build with HAL_VSS_USE_PAL so assuming that's a square wave have you tried wiring it into rusEFI?
