Ford EEC-V 104 Pin Connector

Post by dbh97 »

I have created a footprint for the 104-pin AMP connector used in Ford EEC-V PCMs.
I reverse engineered the dimensions manually, so there are no guarantees they are correct, but I printed it on paper and it seems to match up close enough.

I have also made a blank full-sized PCB available in the repo:

I've put in a order at DirtyPCBs for the breakout, so it should be in my hands some time in January.

These are the harness-side pins. Does anyone know if these can be purchased anywhere?

Looks like I got the mounting hole off by half a hole. It wasn't even used in the OE ECU, so probably not a big deal, but I'll fix it anyhow.

Looks like some pins near the outer sides might be inaccessible hiding under the case edges?

Assembled. I just soldered my jumper wires for my Discovery on the backside. In hindsight I should have done 2 holes per connector pin, like most (all?) of the other breakouts were. I was too lazy.

I bought another PCM so I could have another connector, and this one has a different case:
IMG_20210521_170859.jpg
IMG_20210521_170859.jpg (2.29 MiB) Viewed 20689 times
This PCM is from a 1997 Taurus/Sable. The advantage of this case is more room to place PCB components. The disadvantage is that it doesn't have the heatsink for the PCB. Though that brings up the question of whether we'd use them anyway. In my blank board Kicad model, the 'top' of the board is towards them, so in order to use them, you would have to put the connector on the back side of the board instead of the front. Also, some consideration might be needed for the height of the parts. e.g. electrolytic caps

Edit:
On looking closer, this PCB is physically bigger, with no mounting holes that match up.

As requested, here I am posting my findings thus far:

Most EEC-IV cases do not have the heat spreaders along the sides, but the ones with the sheet metal clamshell have small openings around the J3 port. For a tinkerer this is not a problem, but for an end user that doesn't work so well. In addition to this, the EEC-V connector does fit the IV boxes, but the screw holes will need to be slotted or moved.

As for the terminals, the Delphi (LS computer) and AMP superseal 1.0 are compatible with minor modification to the red locking bar.

David, somehow I do not have these in stock :( To be honest I do not remember why.

I would like to improve silkscreen - I would like to mark pinout of the actual connector on the back side, and wire holes pinout on both sides. Also I need to add "104 Ford EEC-V" before I can fabricate those :)

Not sure if you have time to improve the design but any chance you can label one unit with a sharpie? Or does KiCAD footprint pinout actually match Ford pinout?

@turbotrana can you take a picture and mark which pin is which?

@turbotrana I'll send you one if you pay for the shipping. Not sure how much that would be. If China->AU shipping is comparable to China->US shipping, it might be cheaper for you to get some made. 5 PCBs cost me $44.50 shipped.
There have been two versions. The first version I had made is a 2-layer board, while the second is a 4-layer board with much wider traces. On the second run JLC messed up the fab and didn't drill the mounting holes. It's not designed to be used with the case anyhow, so that's really not too big of an issue, but keep that in mind if you want me to send you some.

@AndreyB The Kicad footprint matches the Ford pin numbers. The connector itself has the 4 outer pins numbered if I recall correctly, which is why I didn't bother with numbering the PCB. I can add numbers to the back.

Yes please? and corresponding wires?

if you are in a lazy mood just number the ones on the edges and like every 5th pin at least? from my experience soldering those the more silk the better. also the whole mirror/flipping much easier to handle if everything is nicely marked

I just read up on Dirtypcbs and see that they would get sent from China so prob best to get from there.

So which files do I send them for the 4 layer board. Is anyone by any chance going to do some update files. Numbering of the pins (eg 0 - 13, 14-26 etc) would be good. Nevertheless credit to you guys. 15 years ago I used to cut up Ford 60pin ecus and solder onto the pins to make harnesses to run aftermarket ECUs. These PCBs make the job a whole lot easier.

Andrey, what do you need a picture of?

This is a pic of a Breakout box I was going to butcher to make my adaptor harness but tracing the pins would have cost alot of time.

I've used Dirtypcbs quite a bit, but I found that this board was big enough that it was cheaper from JLC. At least when I did it; pricing may have changed.

Here are the fab files:

Is there anyone who can give me a hand ordering from JLC. I can't even manage to get the Gerberfab files on the order site (yes have no clue about this PCB stuff) and have no clue what to put in the other order details . I have made an account and could PM the log in details.

Hold off for a sec on ordering that, that's actually the old 2-layer files.

@turbotrana OK I've got the PCB updated, this link should get you the right file.
https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/raw/master/hardware/Breakout_104pin_EEC-V-Connector/export/eecv_gerbers_0.3.zip

Upload that to JLC and it should automatically select 4-layer and the proper board size. I think the only other option you might want to change is if you want a different color. Some colors cost more and take longer.

Some connector data from another site.

Female Terminal - F4SB-14487-AA or XL2T-14487-AA - 776235-1 sourced from onlinecomponents.com

ECU Connector End - F5SB-14A624-AA - 770750-1 sourced from onlinecomponents.com minimum order quantity of 6

Harness Connector End - F5SB-14A464-AA - 776557-1 sourced from onlinecomponents.com minimum order quantity of 48 EDIT 2 connectorpeople.com, they have them in stock but have a $25 dollar minimum.

Gasket - 776237-1 - sourced from onlinecomponents.com minimum order quantity of 625

Housing cover - 770768-1 - sourced from onlinecomponents.com

All of the part numbers listed AFTER the Ford numbers are the TE Connectivity numbers (formerly Tyco Electronics). Those should be able to be sourced virtually anywhere.
