How to clean used PCB headers

Post by AndreyB »

Mercedes 128 pin is not available new, the only option for Hellen 128 Mercedes is scavenging from used ECUs

About a third of the used units come pretty dirty. I've tried spraying CRC Quick Drying Electronic Cleaner but even with a nylon brash that's not enough to lift all the dirt. What else should I try?

Should rusEFI LLC invest $70 in a VEVOR Industry Ultrasonic Cleaner 3L New Stainless Steel Heated Heater w/Timer? For $70 it has to be an amazing piece of machinery! What fluid would help me here? I would love not to dissolve the plastic part and I would love not to have an explosion.

Try simple green. It's definitely safe and it may work.

Wow today I've learned!

https://simplegreen.com/industrial/cleaning-uses/electronics-manufacturing-cleaning/

Code: Select all

Removal of solder-flux @ 1:1 with Crystal (followed by triple water rinse, double de-ionized water rinse and then air or alcohol drying)

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea! But things would fly away :) Need a baby power washer.

basically, you need a small compressor with a small brush. may be, an injector washer? compressed gas cleaner?

The connector would not get damaged by the pressure washer but you'll have to secure it on a vice first.

Since this is literally just the connector. I would try 2+2 Gum Cutter carb cleaner or Gunk Brand carb cleaner. Should be absolutely safe on the plastic. And then a long bristle parts cleaner brush to get down in between the pins if needed.

Damn, is this a brilliant or a horrible idea?! Are we concerned about me being able to eat food washed in this dishwasher later? Are we concerned about any sort of corrosion on the connector terminals?

I would not wash the food, only the dishes. My opinion.

I have used the dishwasher several times to wash boards and it works a treat as long as it doesn't have any iron parts, they tend to rust fast. Just don't use the regular dishwasher soap because most of them are alcaline and can corrode some metals, especially aluminum.

So what should I use? run it without cleaning solution at all?

I've tried detergent for hand washing clothes, baking soda, and hand soap. Basically any detergent will work more or less as long as it's not foaming. Of course you'll have to consider the fact that you have a wife and the possibility of you sleeping outside if she finds out. I don't have that problem.

Major success with VEVOR Industry Ultrasonic Cleaner 3L New Stainless Steel Heated Heater w/Timer and diluted Crystal Simple Green

just 15 minutes + rinse with garden hose + spray with QD Electronic Cleaner + baby compressed air to dry things up, it's DAY and NIGHT improvement
