Manufacturing options

Post by AndreyB »

So far I have used:

http://oshpark.com/- $5 per square inch, free shipping from US. Great options to try tiny modules, not an option for larger boards due to price. No assembly.

http://www.seeedstudio.com/service/ $25 for 10 pieces 10x10cm board + shipping, 5 cents per SMD pin. Hoping to get Frankenstein with some components assembled by them pretty soon. Cons: fairly limited Open parts library of components they would use for assembly.

Today I have learned about another Chinese company: http://smart-prototyping.com/Prototyping-Services/Electronic-Prototyping/PCB-Assembling.html

They have pretty good reviews, per SMD pin fee is higher and minimal assembly order is higher, but they have a full 0805 component book and they source parts for an extra fee without a 100pcs minimum. The PCB cost is the same as seeedstudio.

Do you want to download https://svn.code.sf.net/p/rusefi/code/trunk/hardware/rusefi_hardware_history/frankenstein_rev00.10/gerber/gerber.zip unzip remove "assembly instructions" files to reduce confusion, zip it back and ask them for a quote say for 30 pieces? :)

Did we ever hear back from any of the above inquires?

I also recently discovered http://www.elecrow.com/services-c-73/prototyping-service-c-73_120/pcb-assembly-p-366.html which seems to be almost the same as SeeedStudio's service.

If made in the USA means anything, then http://www.4pcb.com/bare-bones-pcbs/index.html?gclid=CLrUzsjLz74CFYtAMgodTxYA2w been very happy. Know it's not the cheapest place.

http://www.smallbatchassembly.com/ This place is hobbiest friendly, much like OSHPark and OSHStencils, if you need to have a batch of boards with tiny SMD stuff assembled, it might be a viable option.

Another pretty cheap option https://jlcpcb.com/quote
Googling "why is jlcpcb so cheap" gives us an interesting discussion https://www.reddit.com/r/PrintedCircuitBoard/comments/9bt5ed/how_come_jlcpcb_be_so_cheap_compared_to_others/ with the OSHPark guy teaching us new words like Tg130, Tg140 vs Tg180.

I am not making a huge secret from the fact that current source of Frankenso PCBs and assembled boards is not exactly perfect - we've definitely seen a couple of PCB defects. And that's while being quite more expensive than jlcpcb.

Actually @ has an assembled board which gave me some magic sparks on first 12v power on.

In the past year I have read 3 cases of traces falling off PCBs when a burnt component was changed, but I don't know who the PCB manufacturer was. The 2 layer JLCPCBs that I got recently didn't lose any traces, and I applied a lot of heat fixing the FUs you didn't see, but I don't know about complicated stuff like 4 layer.

Mck1117 reminds if ordering boards that we know will need fine pitch SMD done by hand, we should get ENIG instead of HASL regardless of jlcpcb or not

I can't really tell by the pictures but it doesn't look like solder has flowed up the IC leg.

Feels like JLCPCB assembly quality goes down :(

I've soldered connectors on four units this week.

One of two Hyundai has inop MAP sensor input :(
One of two Honda units has inop VVT output :(

Well at least this time JLC has email me the pictures and this time they blame me for not mentioning stm32 temperature limitations.
