VNS14NV04 obsoleted --- Ooops

Post by Roo-Barb »

Hi
I was putting my frankenso together and accidentally blew away a few of the VNS14NV04 chips with the smd heat gun, and I searched the room and found 1 but not the others.
Is there an equivalent chip available?
As I tried to purchase replacements her in Australia and was told by RS Components and Farnell (Element 14) that they were no longer manufactured and they don't list an equivalent.

Thanks.
:?: :?:    :( :( :(

I see mouser has over 1k of these chips available in qty 1. https://octopart.com/vns14nv04ptr-e-stmicroelectronics-21024684

I also see ST has them marked as "active" http://www.st.com/web/catalog/sense_power/FM1965/CL2148/SC1038/PF241454

I'm not sure why Farnell claims "no longer manufactured" on this page http://uk.farnell.com/stmicroelectronics/vns14nv04tr-e/mosfet-omnifetii-40v-12a-so-8/dp/1739437?ost=VNS14NV04&categoryId=&categoryName= while Newark claims "More stock available week commencing 3/21/16" on this page http://www.newark.com/stmicroelectronics/vns14nv04ptr-e/abd-vipower/dp/73T2629?ost=73T2629&CMP=AFC-OP&categoryId=&categoryName=

I suspect that's an error on Farnell's part. I see the datasheet notes it's a 12A 40V MOSFET, that Farnell page claims it's a 7A 55V. There are many errors on that Farnell page.

Does ordering from Mouser work for you? I rarely find what I'm looking for at Farnell and have never ordered from RS Components. It seems they don't have good inventory for these types of projects. I generally end up with either Mouser or Digikey.

I think that they like to milk us dry down here.
Mouser have an Australian website but ship from the US @ minimum $48 shipping for ic's.

Newark and Farnell always refer us back to local Elemen14.

RS are usually good but like E14 say no stock and obsolete, and list an SO8 in a dual configuration for $1.50 free shipping, but no use.

Can I order more from the Tindie store?

Cheers.

I have poor memory but even I remember that while yes, technically "VNS14NV04" is obsolete - it was replaced with "VNS14NV04P-E" couple years ago, so that's not a problem. See http://rusefi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=249#p1378

Is there a chance to call element14? If not I can definitely ship you some replacement chips but shipping would be $25 anyway.

I seem to recall there is some variations in packaging as well. The tube's are hard to find, and you typically need to get the reel style.

From this page http://www.st.com/web/catalog/sense_power/FM1965/CL2148/SC1038 I see the below potential options. Remember that a higher Rds will dissipate a bit more heat, but it also sounds like your only running 2 of these, so perhaps that's not an issue of concern.

VNS14NV04P-E
VNS7NV04P-E
VNN3NV04P-E
VNS1NV04P-E

Can you find any of these from local supply?

So today VNS14NV04PTR-E is not available anywhere in stock while part is currently in production. Something weird going on but we need a safe Plan B option...

It does appear that these parts are available on AliExpress, going to grab 10 off there and hope for the best, will report back in a few weeks I guess, since shipping takes a while.

How about VNL5090S5-E ?
Or even more powerful VNL5030S5-E ?
Besides, it's more advanced OMNIFET III technology (instead of OMNIFET II in VNS14).
Both in SO8 package and with all 'smart' protections (no flyback diode required).

If we keep the current PCB layout, then VNS7NV04PTR-E is likely the new OMNI II option. We might be able to find other protected MOSFET's, but that appears to be the current ST offering. The concern is that it appears ST is shifting to OMNI III which appears to typically offer a different pin out, as they offer feedback status signals. I see the SOT-223 which might fit in the existing footprints area, but is a different footprint, an different PCB's.

I believe the AUIRF7484Q is a drop in replacement for the existing OMNI II injector driver.

So looks like we have three feasible options? Now listed together at https://rusefi.com//wiki/index.php?title=Manual:Hardware_Frankenso_board#Low_side_switch_options

Hmmm, 9 months to make that baby chip. I guess that's the normal time frame for these baby things.

So the AliExpress parts came, I haven't installed them to the board yet but given one a test on the breadboard and it seems decent. The stock on the site seems pretty good so I think we can still get the original parts if anyone's dead set on following the spec to the letter
