ELM327 protocol

I was reading about GEVCU (that's an ECU for electric cars) and I like one of their ideas: instead of implementing OBD-II output, they are pretending to be an ELM327 OBD device - so, they bypass the OBD physical protocol and work the existing ELM327-compatible apps directly.

That's a cool bell (or whistle) I think.

i'd better focus on core functionality.
what's so tricky about elm? becoming more popular than obDii itself? is it just bluetooth or wired connection?
i wonder why they still have to deal with this stuff - why not creating a common wireless network (wifi/bluetooth)?

I seem to recall this http://freediag.sourceforge.net/ had most of the layers for OBDII and only needs a physical interface, something like the one found here http://jeff.noxon.cc/2013/05/18/opendiag-obd-ii-schematics-pcb-layout/
