1991 Volvo 240 Racecar #49

Post by mck1117 »

This car is nearly the same as my 1993 Volvo 240's setup, but it's a different engine in a different car, so a new thread is in order!

The car is a 1991 Volvo 240 sedan, bought by myself and some friends to go budget racing. Since I'm in the Seattle area, we're planning to run with the Lucky Dog Racing League.

The engine is a Volvo b230 with around 2.25mm shaved off the head for 11.4:1 compression and a mild port, a gigantic camshaft, and long tube 4-2-1 headers.

The EFI setup is a Frankenso (for now), stock 60-2 crank trigger with VR sensor (on the flywheel), sequential fire injectors, 4 LS ignition coils currently running wasted spark, and a cj125 wideband controller.

Here's the car running (don't mind the vice grip battery cable):

I suppose I should provide an update on this car:

July 17 I took the car to a track day, running on Frankenso. Other than identifying a (now fixed) trigger performance bug, the ECU did fine. The car had some pretty serious windshield fogging problems since it was raining, but that wasn't rusEfi's fault.

Over the past few weeks I've switched the car over to run on microRusefi, and this car was the first started engine on the new microRusefi board!

More updates:

Back in October we ran our first race with Lucky Dog at Portland International Raceway! The engine and ECU did admirably. A few unrelated failures (alternator failed, exhaust fell off) put us out for a few hours, but we did great for our first race.

Over the winter I rebuilt the engine, and exchanged the weak Volvo M47 gearbox for a Tremec T5 from a Mustang. Just last week, it started for the first time on the fresh rebuild!

Time for the annual thread update. Car mostly ran great at our race last June, and just did a track day in preparation for our race at the end of the month.

Can you move your analog G-meter a bit more into camera frame? :)

Injured the engine a bit at the last race, so we rebuild it to find that we'd broken 3 top piston rings

Engine is now rebuilt and back in the car, so here's the current tune+log:
