Hello from Minnesota - Looking at MicroRusEFI for my MC!

Post by The-Gingineer »

Hello, I'm an engineer from Minnesota, and I'm considering building a MicroRusEFI for my CBR1100XX with a Turbo. Hoping to figure out how to do all this. I'm also thinking about making a slightly different PCB so I can include a BCM and PCM on one board, and I want to use a different connector. As I dive in, I'm sure I'll have TONS of questions.

Hello and welcome!

It sounds like your goals are ambitious. Do you mind if I ask what the driving factor to having the ECU, BCM, and PCM all on one board is? Today you could buy a MRE which is made to drive a 4 cylinder engine. Then use the cbr1100xx BCM and PCM and be done with the electricals?

It could be difficult getting help with this project since everyone is already working on many other projects and having the ECU, BCM, and PCM is going to make your project very specific to your build, as well as expensive to replace if anything is mis-routed or anything breaks.

How come you're looking to combine the two? In that scenario, you'll likely be the only person in the world running your specific board which really limits the opportunity for others to help out...

There is currently work happening on a power distribution module which could likely fill the role of your BCM (though it's probably a lot more capable than you need on a motorcycle). Perhaps a reduced version of that paired with MRE (MicrorusEfi) would provide the functionality you're looking for while producing designs that would be useful to the whole community.

The reason is mostly space saving. I've switched the tail, and there's not much room. I'm hoping to integrate it all into a new gauge cluster. While I say including the body control module, I'd be using a completely separate processor for that purpose, and it's really just to control the lights through several modes, and an RFID key. I want to use 1 or 2 Molex connectors. I'd really just be adding additional board material and changing the connector.

Welcome to the candy shop ...
I think what you need first take MRE and start your engine ... After you see what you need extra ...

That's a very smart point. With under $100 mostly-assembled MRE kit this could be very useful experience even if not part of the final solution.

Sounds like adapter PCB to MRE would be a good first start. The breakout could be expanded to include other features while you could still use the same MRE.

Another great proposal! We actually have microRusEfi as a KiCad symbols so developing adapter PCBs could not be easier!
