And logic analyzer hooked to discovery pins shows activity when I poke ELM327 - this makes me think that we have a firmware issue?

Poor wiring was the issue. Two different ELM327 clones were handling poor wiring very differently, both now work once I've hooked female connectors on Frankenso 64 pin connector header.
I've got https://github.com/fr3ts0n/AndrOBD/wiki to work - that's an ODB open source software for Android. We can technically build something on top of it...

By far the most poplar is the M12 5 pin, followed by the M12 4 pin. I think you'll find the M8 is small and easily damaged. However if you have a fairly low stress environment, and you have space concerns, the M8 is smaller.
