VAG ME7.5 build

Post by deaner »

Hey all! Just here creating a thread to document process of getting my 2000 Audi A4 1.8t setup on Proteus. Parts are ordered and hopefully enroute so I can hit the ground running when they show up. Currently the car is big(ish) turbo, all the bolt ons and running standalone from Ignitron ECU and is tuned by me. An ECU I absolutely adore mind you... just wanting to play with some open source stuff and I love tuner studio! With this car I've open sourced tuned the factory ecu, then had Eurodyne Maestro for bit and now I've been using IECU for almost 2 years. The cars been a daily for a few years now and after picking up a 2008 Audi A3 3.2 last spring to replace it, the A4 has officially been moved to track car/test mule status!

Plan of action once all parts have arrived, is to build a PNP harness using RusEFI breakout setup. Then just get the car to run. I'm comparing wiring schematics currently and I dont believe I'll have much issue wiring it up. I'm more concerned with my lack soldering skills! Lots to learn! I'll update as parts show up and I'll try and get some picture rolling too. Looking forward to this project!

Sweet-sweet, we can use your help if/when we go with a PnP 121 pin ECU!

I've create a stub of https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/VAG-B5 page and linked on https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/Vault-Of-Vag-Info

If you would be interested to document stuff that would help us :) like for instance https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/HOWTO-M73-v12-on-Proteus https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/HOWTO-M111-on-microRusEFI

Absolutely! Projects just waiting on parts at this stage. I've started putting together a spreadsheet for pinouts using the RusEFI 121p breakout board. Thanks for the diagram on the wiki page btw! Helps some with colors and such. Between that and the pinout schematic available for the standalone that's in the car now, it should be pretty straight forward. I'm planning to add a couple wires in my jumper harness for future compatibility in my A3 too. Will make hotswapping ecus easy for development on the newer chassis too. Theres not a whole lot different in the pinouts between the two cars. I plan to info dump here as I make more progress. Should be fun!

Oh, figured I'd just ask as I havent gotten the answer via searching/reading that I'm looking for. Proteus does in fact have onboard WBO2 yeah? I can feed and configure the factory 4.2 lambda sensor that's in the car now?

Yeah, I've been through the links a couple of times and must have missed a definitive answer in there. Bummer no onboard WB, oh well!

Small update. Between being a single full time dad to two monsters and work being crazy, not a ton of progress has been made. I was hoping to have this patch harness finished up and aimed at a test fire in the car this weekend, but it may be a stretch. Small progress is still progress though! Just about all of the parts I need are here, just need to get my butt in gear and finish this thing.

I've setup the patch harness to kick the needed power and signals to the factory O2 connector and using a spartan 2 wbo2, should be a pnp affair. At first I was going to populate a bunch of spare pins for future upgrades but opted against it for now. I havent had the need for more than what's available with my current ecu in almost 2 years and dont foresee the need for more. Plus this is mostly a test piece and I just want to get the car running ASAP as I know there will be plenty of tinkering once installed.

Excel. Once this ecu is in the car and running, I'll post up my finalized pinout and harness setup.

Doing some finalizing of wiring and realizing I'm running out of digital inputs lol. VAG ecus love to know what's going on with things like cruise, clutch and brake positions. May have to ditch brake switch in favor of the option of using my cruise control stalk to do table switching in the future. I have it setup that way in my current ecu and love it.

Question I am scratching my head on, is speedo output. Is that an FSIO thing I'll need to tinker with? The factory speedo gets it signal from the ecu it seems like.... I'll need to do some more digging...

You can also use analog inputs as digital inputs, by the way. Analog temp inputs have a built in pullup to 5 volts, and analog volt inputs have a very weak pulldown to ground.

Oh kick ass. I think that just solved that issue then. Thanks!

Any ideas on speedo output? Thinking of just putting it as a low side output for now to keep things rolling forward, until I can learn more to sort it out in TS.

An extra ignition output is probably your best bet. If that doesn't work, I'd try a high side 12v output. If you have a scope you can just probe the wire on the OEM setup.

Hmmm....I'll think on that as it's not computing right now lol. How would I set that as an ouput? I'm not even sure if the speedo signal from the from the factory ecu to the cluster even drives the gauge or not....

Another thing I'm struggling with, is setting just a basic digital output that's only ON when the engine is running. I'm wanting to power a spartan 2 from the ecu so I can make it the WBO2 pnp as well. Does the "heater pin" under "EGO Sensor" in TS have a timer or is it sensing at all? Or does it send 12v when engine is running only?

Pins 11 and 12 on the white35, are those only hot with ignition? Can they be set set to be hot when engine running only?

Sorry for the ignorance and many thanks!!

Yes, 'ON' if engine is running, 'OFF' if stopped or cranking - I've just added a clarification tooltip.

I would hope that speedo is CAN? No? Just a random guess here.

Awesome to know and thanks for the insight. I was hoping it was going to be that easy!

I'm not exactly sure on the speedo. I havent looked to terribly deeply into it lately.

Had some time this weekend and buttoned up this patch harness, as well as built out the Spartan 2 to be pnp into the 2nd O2 sensor at the factory harness. This way I can leave the primary 02 sensor in the DP and hooked up so I can go back and forth between ecus should I need to. All I have left before actually plugging it into the car is to sort out a firmware issue and finish building the base file! I've got a weekend trip planned and am really hoping I can try and start this thing before I leave. Getting closer...

Its alive! Well, kind of lol. Leaving on a trip today for the weekend and reeeeeeeally wanted to see if I could get the car to start before I left. Dinked with it a lil bit last night before an evening meeting and got it to start!! ETB calibration was a little clunky and took some fiddling, it's still needing work, BUT! It started!! ETB works great with the key off but is dead when the key is on lol. I ran out of time to trouble shoot and dial in settings but I'm so stoked! Uuuuggghhhhh....have to wait until next week to tinker some more tho lol!

Not yet, hopefully this week! The EBT needs work and it would fire and then die after a couple of secs. Theres something going on where the EBT works with the key off, but not with the key on. I had limited time to monkey with it before I left town for the weekend lol. Should have it sorted this week as long as the weather holds. Heck yeah to days getting longer!

I'm pulling my hair out here lol. Got the ecu in the car, calibrated sensors, checked I/Os etc. ETB is being weird. I can get the car to start but then I think the TB closes and it shuts off. I was having issues with the ETB working with the key off, but not key on and thought it was my 12v MR source at pin 23(highside/ETB 12v supply.) As a quick work around I set up a relay the gets 12v direct from the battery and triggered by a low side output. Tested all of that on the bench and theres power at pin 23 when the LS output is grounded. Awesome, circuit works as it should. Built a basic PWM on/off table, tested and works like it's supposed to. Put it all back in the car and get the same results, ETB works with key off and not with key on. W...T....F....

Weird part that I'm not understanding now....I bumped my laptop which unplugged the USB and the relay tripped while the buzzing at the TB stopped. What? Plugged usb back in and buzzing starts up again. USB is backfeeding the 12v feed? What is happening here?

of exactly the behavior you described:

- etb works with key off
- no ETB with key on
- car starts but dies

It'll be extra helpful if you can set the debug mode (in the "Base Engine" dialog) to "Analog Inputs #2".

Calibrate your TPS with the ignition on.

The ECU's power supply sags by ~0.2-0.4 volt when powered by USB, so the TPS consistency checking fails when the voltage rises up to the nominal level when powered via the ignition switch. When you turn the ignition on, check a red indicator coming on down at the bottom of the TunerStudio window that says "tps error".

I'm not sure how? When USB is plugged in, the ETB doesn't work with the ignition on. Is there a way to not have the usb power the ecu?

Can you power ECU via ignition first and only than plug USB?
