At the moment there are hopes around https://github.com/rusefi/rusefi/wiki/Ion-Sense which would mean using one of a recommended COPs. We are months away from a working prototype and many months away from the complete solution.

Re: Proteus v12 club
Most 4 pin coils are actually power, ground (power), ground (signal) and signal. That's the pinout on LS coils.
Re: Proteus v12 club
the Ion Sense will be some kind of "dumb " coil, ( Simon is using the Mini coil currently) and a custom board from rusefi--
Until that happens, i am using GM "Yukon" coils on my V12-- seem to work well, fitting into the tight spark plug hole... and cheap at the junkyard...

Re: Proteus v12 club
Got kinda bored with my luxury coupe idea and thought about scrapping it, but then I saw this and got some wild inspiration and motivation. Going to drop my M73 in a Z3. Judt got the engine to the machine shop to extract the broken headbolts and I have all the bits to rebuilt it ready to go. Now to find a cheap broken Z3 and figure out a good manual trans fit
Re: Proteus v12 club
Well, you are at the right place... My plan for the M73 is to drop it into a Z4 E85!
The easiest fit manual tranny is a from a 540i
We all look forward to your Z3 build!
soon there will be a VEE12 Z3 and a VEE12 Z4 roaming the streets
Re: Proteus v12 club
Z3? Z4?
This is going to be GREEEAAAT!

Do you have a model number by chance ? Im far from any scrapyard so my options are limited to internet search..bill wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 2:27 pmthe Ion Sense will be some kind of "dumb " coil, ( Simon is using the Mini coil currently) and a custom board from rusefi--

Re: Proteus v12 club
i guess you call them LS coils
i grabbed from the junkyard, but you can get them new on eBay for not much money
the "yukon" ones have little metal bits on top

Re: Proteus v12 club
That's what I use...the yukon D585 ones which are supposed to spark the hottest. They were like $10 each and came in ferrari red

Re: Proteus v12 club
yea , the junkyard charges $8 used
so 10 pesos is a deal
" COIL ELECTRONIC $8.57 $0.00 $0.00 $0.00"

I would love too but I have no clue how to post pic..
Re: Proteus v12 club
nice ! Ill give a try as soon as I have interesting photos to share. Ill post in the "my project" page
Re: Proteus v12 club
They look great, but they still use a cable right ? I might try to find something like what is on the m62b44.. If it fit with the headers. if not this is gona be my option. And I love the idea of red !

Re: Proteus v12 club
Yes, all LS coils (GM pushrod V8 engines after 1997 or so) have individual coil-near-plug with a short wire to the plug.
Factory setup puts the coil up on top of the valvecover, since the plug is down on the side (2 valve pushrod cylinder head):
Re: Proteus v12 club
For me I just wanted the plug wires to kind of keep it looking 1980s with plug wires running across the cam covers as original so these were perfect. For sure that not a concern for most builds but I personally think it looks right/good on older stuff.

Re: Proteus v12 club
Soo yea took a look at the engine and realized the sparkplug goes right between headers.
Cable it is.
Is double spark plug a thing in cars ? I'm use to built motorcycle engine and in Harley's we would drill a second hole to get 2 spark per cylinders. never seen that in cars. just a question.

Re: Proteus v12 club
It is a think sort of. Its common on air cooled 911 engines and top fuel cars run 5 plugs I think, all airplanes have 2. On planes it a reliability thing, 2 separate ignition system. On early porsche and Harley the chamber design blocks the plug on high CR setups requiring stupid high timing advance so adding a 2nd plug increases hp by allowing more reasonable advance. Fuel motors the stuff burns so slow any little bit faster helps make hp....so 5JRockland wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 5:36 pmSoo yea took a look at the engine and realized the sparkplug goes right between headers.

On a center plug 4 valve and most modern 2v design that is not the case and there is no power to be gained so no reason to go to the bother.
