I've had a couple cars with rebuilt titles, I just resold 1 and am driving the other so I know they can be made to pass at least here in PA. The roof is structural so the repair is normally cut it off at the pillars and weld on a new one, so its pretty common to reason to total a car as I understand it. Generally they want to see a lot of pictures of what the damage was, and the steps you took to repair it, receipts for ALL the materials, it so its probably best to look into exactly what they expect you to bring to the inspection before you start any repairs.....bondo and spray paint will almost certainly not get you back on the road I guess is what I'm saying before you pay anybody to do that. Here is PA they give you a list of shops and you can pick one and talk to them, up in NY they used to require you to bring it to a state run place (that was 20 years ago when I lived there, no idea today), not sure what they do in NJ but best to find out before you start any body work.

Well, I've called another of the three inspection sites and the guy on the phone was super cool. "Oh roof dents? Maybe try popping the dents yourself, as long as you document it and there is a improvement between before and after."

Checked NJMVC all the rules are focusing on making sure I am not using stolen part and no works on structural or else repair requirements.

Just for fun a random vehicle with NJ plates from a parking lot yesterday. I know there is no reason to assume that he has passed salvage inspection but still fun :)

That's awesome news!....some of the guys can be real dicks about it, like it has to be factory new to pass.

And you're right that you can drive total junk, as long as there was no insurance claim, there is no salvage title. Years ago I bought my 1st new car, a 1989 suzuki swift GT....the GT had the big 100hp 4 cylinder engine, not the little 55hp 3 cylinder that came in the geo metro version. Away, at about 6 months I drove it into a big rock in an ice storm not knowing that in the pile of mail on the passenger seat was a notice that my collision insurance had been cancelled...so my new car the I still owed 3 1/2 years on was not insured and fixing it was up to me....and the engine now partially in the passenger compartment. For $11000 at the dealer I bough a new floor, firewall, both front strut supports and a few other bits then sawed the whole busted front and bottom of the car off, welded in new stuff, a little paint and back out on the street with no inspection of any kind required. It later turned out even the engine was bent and it was tearing out clutches, I hit the rock hard....but swapsheet (old school craigslist) delivered a new engine and trans for a couple hundred $$ and I drove it another 100k miles before I sold it.......it would have even had a clean carfax report, but take the insurance money and BAM! the car is marked for life.

Replacement used air shocks bet did not play out. Those are worse than original - those leak even faster.


In the next few days I will move 760 to my garage and start thinking about the next steps.

Simon says that the solution it to take the electronic damping solenoid out of the dead shocks, leave it plugged in and hidden behind the trim and fit normal shocks.

11 months 2 weeks later it's at my garage!

This vehicle has given me some new grey hair today and I bet it would keep giving :)

At the moment it only starts with a jumper pack. When I've parked it battery was showing 3.3 volts. Let's if it would start after 24 hours on 2A setting.

There is a cute small puddle of water around the battery in the trunk.

Next step learning the safe procedure for battery disconnect, next step learning how to actually get the battery from the trunk without killing myself. A lot of next steps but most importantly I did not die today and the car driven into the garage under own power :)

Copngrats! Driving it must have felt great after so long..... would imagine anyway.....not that I would know what actually driving a V12 car is like.... :?

In the coming days I will make calls about pulling out roof damage/ugly painting just to pass inspection if that's even possible.

The damage in the passenger side headlight seem to be the reason why hood does not close properly on passenger side. Funny fact: driver side headlights seem to be twice cheaper that passenger side headlights on eBay. I will only know if I care about this once I have more information on the roof situation.

Foggy lights can be fixed very easy, you need 1500 grit film pads ($25 for 50) and some Meguires 105 cut compound ($15).
Sand and polish to desired finish. Can do both in about and hour.
If you want them really shiny hit them with a diminishing compound like their "ultimate compound" afterwards and then just wax when you do the rest of the car.
I just used a set of these to do the lights on the z3, they are aggressive enough to bust through the oxidation and UV damage but not so rough you can't polish them back out. https://www.ebay.com/itm/224623430657?epid=252121938&hash=item344c998c01:g:H9kAAOSwS51ebUBU
Don't get paper, the film discs are about the right size to wrap around a normal sanding block and don't break up when wet.

Dent on the outer edge of the roof will need a body shop to pull it out with tacks and then paint, the one on the roof skin might be able to make less obvious without paint but not going to get rid of it. TBH I would not stress it too much and just clean it up best you can.

Bill might be on something!

Spend an hour taking out the headliner he says, then use a hammer and dolly to bang it out from the back. This dent pulling just looks like overkill for a roof that you can get behind and hammer out. If you are good with the (plastic head) hammer and dolly, you may not even break the paint off the outside.

Internet says take off handles, sun visors and headliner consoles, than remove headliner.

Next step is finding more precise instructions on how to accomplish the line above. Haynes does not have a repair manual for this body :(

Do we know if paint code is mentioned anywhere on this BMW? Once I get the used headlight (ordered) we will invest another $50 into this glorious project.

Salvage cars in New Jersey are not legally drivable. After you have gotten the necessary repairs on your salvage car, then you can apply to get a repair title, stating that you can legally register the car and get it insured. So next week I will get plates.

Still no idea what's the plan. Straight pipes? A huge sticker on the side? Probably a lot of CAN sniffing and making transmission happy with rusEFI messages.
